...Mormonism was a defiantly apartheid faith that denied blacks full participation based on doctrinal beliefs that whites are "pure" and "delightsome," while black-skinned people are "unrighteous," "despised" and "loathsome" descendants of the biblical Cain, who was cursed for killing Abel.
The priesthood proscription, which operated under a "one-drop rule," wasn't in place simply to keep blacks out of leadership posts. Ultimately, the ban was a manifestation of a central belief that blacks are unfit to be full members of the church on Earth, or to exist alongside whites in heaven...
Mormon leaders were applauded for finally ending the prohibition. But according to Mr. Mauss, the church has never repudiated the teachings that supported the policy. In 2004, he wrote, "ironically, the doctrinal folklore that many of us thought had been discredited, or at least made moot, through the 1978 revelation, continued to appear . . . [in church literature] written well after 1978 and continues to be taught by well-meaning teachers and leaders in the church to this very day." And "Mormon America," which was just re-released, notes plainly that "Mormon teaching against race-mixing remains in force."
Throughout his current campaign for the Republican nomination, Mr. Romney has declined to distance himself from the repugnant racial teachings of his church...
In his ballyhooed speech earlier this month, Mr. Romney said he wouldn't renounce any of Mormonism's precepts. And for all his claims to the contrary, Mr. Romney has, in fact, been willing to distance himself from past teachings of the church--just not those having to do with its treatment of black people...

The effort to have America's immigration laws vigorously enforced is well underway in this area. Nearby Prince William County has actually shut down the illegal alien hiring hall.
George Romney and his brother, Mitt’s uncle, played key roles in the changes that came in 1978. Stop shooting your mouth off about that about which you know nothing.
You still have them, and in no way will changing the subject to illegal immigration remove the issue of blacks in the LDS Church.
But, nice try. I’ll give you a “B” for effort.
My daughter-in-law is the child of illegal immigrants. They live in an entirely immigrant neigborhood in Herndon Virginia. They came to the US in the 1960’s from Guatemala. She has since become a citizen and her parents as well. She now serves proudly as a Sargeant in the US Army.
Most of her neighbors are still illegals. But this is not the topic at hand. If you have and immigration issue to discuss, I suggest you post an article.
All you wish to know is your own prejudices. You need to know some reality.
What are YOU doing to get more blacks up there?
Yes and the man who petitioned the Virginia legislature to be permitted to own slaves was himself black. That tidbit never makes it into the history books.
You sound like the people who were angry the Olympics were being held in Utah because the state wasn’t “racially diverse” enough. As if that’s one of the criteria for having a successful event.
There aren’t many blacks in Utah for the same reason there aren’t many in the Dakotas, Wyoming, or Idaho. Blacks are concentrated in the South or in very large cities. Salt Lake City ain’t exactly a megalopolis.
There are ton of reasons to vote against Mitt, but the Mormon church’s thankfully discarded racial policy isn’t one of them.
As defined by you, of course.
It won't play well in America. That's why we are vetting Mitt now.
You think Americans are going to look the other way at racism?
I own a business in Utah. 10% of my employees are black (which is double the average percentage of black residents)
Oh yes, Idaho and Wyoming have a high percentage of LDS. Thanks for making my point.
Other than your pompous statement, prove it. Kind of along put up or shut up, eh Gander?
Are you relocating them at your expense to Utah?
Really, it doesn't matter to me if the LDS doesn't want blacks. There's on old saying, "Why would I want to join an organization that doesn't want me?"
The do every day. That's why we have affirmative action and a Congress dominated by race-obsesses people.
And if you want to see Utah have a larger black population, the net result will be that the population there becomes more race conscious, not less. Visit Detroit if you don't believe me.
No doubt Souvrn' Baptists can get Utah's Baptists (the other half of the business community) to follow suit.
Besides, this thread starts with a business oriented publication (WSJ) making comments about race relations within the framework of Mormon theological history ~ and WSJ was ALSO in the camp of the Amnesty folks.
You can either defend WSJ's opinion piece, and all their social baggage (which includes Amnesty for illegal aliens) or you can condemn WSJ stepping into the world of theological dispute.
I prefer to keep WSJ where they belong ~ with their own people ~ the rich, stockholders, skibums, and out of church where they clearly don't belong.
The = They. Typo!
You don’t know what you’re talking about. Do the Western mountain provinces of Canada have high black populations like Montreal and Toronto?
I actually didn't intend to be persuasive ~ it's much less fun than having otherwise rational, reasonable, even friendly people screaming at each other over a vast chasm of discordancy.
My objection in dragging out the less than desirable behavior of the LDS Church is that it is being used to smear Mitt Romney, who certainly should not be tarred. His family's commitment to civil rights dates back to his father. Should we attack Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson because of the segregation in Southern Baptist and Church of Christ congregations before the 1960s and frequent advocacy of white supremacy and, before that of slavery, among its members and even its clergy? IIRC, McCain's ancestors were slaveowners. Giuliani's father was a convicted felon and a low level gangster.
Properly speaking, revisionist history falls into two varieties: neo-Nazis and other anti-Semites who deny the Holocaust, specifically, the mass murder of Jews in concentration camps, happened and Marxists and other leftists who blame America and European civilization for all the woes of the world. Both varieties are nonsense. Defending Mitt Romney, whom I do not support, against warrantless smears, is not revisionist history, but standing for fairness and truth.
BTW, Ohio and Illinois are Great Lakes states. The Mormon communities in Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois, were in areas settled mainly by New Englanders and Pennsylvanians. As an amateur genealogist, I can affirm that those relatives of mine who converted to the LDS Church were Ohioans and Indianans who emigrated to those states from New York and Pennsylvania. Those of my forbears who first arrived in Virginia and North Carolina never affiliated with the Mormons.
