NYT-Approved Blogger: Dems Should Learn From 'Amazingly Unconservative' Huckabee
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 12/22/2007 11:20:02 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

The current column at the NY Times Opinionator blog, Huckabee and the Democratic Ideal, wonders "where’s the Democratic Mike Huckabee?" It answers its own question by approvingly citing David Seaton, an American expatriate blogger living in Madrid, who writes thusly [emphasis added]:

Democrats could learn a lot by studying Huckabee. I have no idea what is really behind Mike Huckabee’s friendly facade, but he is making some interesting and nuanced noises for a southern populist and I think Democrats should take note of these nuances and make some of the same noises.

They already do.

I sure don’t like Huckabee’s “I’m a Conservative but I’m not angry about it” schtick.

I’m a conservative too and I have never been angry about it.

Maybe the Democrats should nominate Huckabee?

This is good advice. If the Dems could nominate guys like Huckabee, they could win.

Of course, then they’d really be in trouble, but that’s another story.

I had an inner Lenin once.

After I found out where he was hiding I suffocated him to death.

Problem solved.

I would throw Elmer Gantry into the equation too. Then he would be the triune candidate.

I beg to differ. The Democratic Party’s Huckabee was Jimmy Carter.

Seaton stops short of endorsing Huckabee. But it's noteworthy that another one of Seaton's columns in praise of the former Arkansas governor is entitled "Huckabee tickles my inner Lenin."

You really have to read this to believe it;

It should be remembered that Southern Evangelical Protestantism is resentful and anti-elitist before it is anything else. It is against any "expert" opinion. They feel that these "experts" look down on them with contempt and they are probably right.

...

The entire American economy is based on making people feel bad about themselves, making them feel poor, ugly, sick, helpless, stupid, inadequate and then offering to sell them something to relieve the pain of rejection and failure. What, despite all its grotesque fanaticism, is truly healthy about all this Evangelical, rapture, mishegoss is that it is a real rebellion against the basic, inhuman tool of the system... Its unhappiness factory. Here we should note the significance of Huckabee's losing a hundred pounds. If you knew anything at all about southern cooking you would understand that such weight loss by any southerner, either black of white, could easily be taken for a miracle of God... a SIGN.

If one wants to understand or explain anything in politics it's best to start with what's universal in human nature. If one gets too deeply into what some "they" think and how "they" behave, one can make a real *ss of oneself.

Mike Huckabee is who the MSM wants for the GOP Presidential candidate.

Yep, that would be a win-win. They’d then get either Huckster, or Hillary/Obama as president.

Dem flak, talking head, and talk show host Bill Press was swooning for the Huckster on TV about two weeks ago. You "Values Voters" and Hucksters, what does Rat Bill Press know, that you do not?

Huckabee has surged because he won a couple of debates and he’s got evangelical support. If a quick rise can happen to the liberal pro-life evangelical Huckster, it can happen to the conservative pro-life evangelical Hunter.

.

According to Intrade, the winner of the December 12th GOP debate was... Duncan Hunter.

They do have a lot to learn from Huckabee. They could win the Presidency if they’d jetison the less than popular radical abortion and sexual agendas from their party. It is sad but there are a lot of people that don’t mind putting the screws to others as long as they are “the rich”.
