Arizona City Cops Ask Citizenship Proof
New York Times ^ | December 23, 2007

PHOENIX (AP) -- Police in suburban Scottsdale have begun routinely asking for proof of citizenship from every suspect they arrest and turning those who are in this country illegally over to federal immigration officials.

The procedure was started Oct. 15, a result of the September killing of Phoenix police officer Nick Erfle by an illegal immigrant, Erik Jovani Martinez.

Scottsdale police had arrested Martinez on a misdemeanor charge 16 months earlier but they released him then because they didn't know he was an illegal immigrant who had been twice deported.

Erfle's killing ''caused us to look at what were asking suspects,'' Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said. ''If we arrest someone and then find that we called ICE (Customs and Immigration Enforcement) and they put a hold on them, then we know they have been deported and are back again.''

Martinez was later killed by police after he stole a car and took a hostage, authorities said.

Now police in the affluent suburb ask every suspect about their citizenship, have ICE agents pick up those who are in this country illegally, and keep a database of possible illegal immigrants in case they turn up again.

I kind of have a problem with this too. Let me see... I was born in Detroit, but I don’t carry a birth certificate to prove it, only a Colorado DL, an El Paso County CCW permit, my military ID... lemme see, Ham radio license... Ummm.... Social Security Card, NRA card and library card. None of those SAY I’m a citizen....

Then again, I served 26 years in the military, and my ham license can’t be issued to a foreign citizen (not the way it is issued, though foreigners can hold a temporary US license while visiting).

My DL isn’t “proof”...

My CCW permit required my birth certificate I think, I can’t remember now...

So... am I a citizen if I can’t “prove it”? Hmmmm

Immigantion must be controlled.

I can recall what happened to the indigenous population who lived on what we today call the great plains. In essence thay were made into the villans who had to be suppressed by any means at our disposal. That demonization took place in the 1800's, a little before my time, but I have seen the results in many of the reservations on the northern great plains. The results are nothing to be poroud of.

Today, as it was in the 1930's we again have a demon that must be suppressed. As it was in the days leading up to the persecution of the Jews in Europe, a scape goat has been found to hate. This time the demon has taken the form of the native population of the Central America. Be very careful how you treat this demon and watch how your elected representatives solve the problem which they invented. It was Ben Franklin, in 1776 who said "Those who sacrifice essential liberty for temporary safety are not deserving of either liberty or safety." Is that what you really want?

Yes, we need to be careful how we handle this - simply recognizing the problem would be a good first step, closing the borders a good second step - once that’s done, look for a good third step.

We cannot allow Mexicans to take over - once the baby boomers retire health care expense will go through the ceiling and adding the cost of treating non-citizens will be out of the question. We need to take care of each other first - those who have ‘served’ as citizens all their lives and in so many ways. Funds are not unlimited and Mexico must take care of their own.

>>> I can understand that police will place above normal attempts at going after a cop killer. What I can’t understand is them doing anything less for the average citizen. <<< That nails it. Nothing else needs be said!!

I posted something similar earlier this year, concerning those people killed by illegal drunk drivers. That, as soon as some politician or high level bureaucrat is killed, or one of their family members, something would be done about it.

It's too bad it took several cops being shot for them to wake up to what the average citizen has known for a long time. There are plenty of cops who are just as frustrated as we are with catch-and-release policies, I'm sure. Illegal perps are often treated with kid gloves compared to one of us citizens.

There is a radio ad for car insurance in Tucson that starts out "You're at the stop light. Look at the car on your left. Look at the one to your right. The odds are that in Tucson, one of them is uninsured."

A lot of them are illegals. 50% uninsured is way out of control.

Oddly, my daughter was just hit by an uninsured motorist with an Hispanic surname. Means little, but the insurance company will give her much, much more trouble than will the State of Texas for driving uninsured.

Overall, not much damage done, but enough that her $3000 car may be totaled.

That means we need to find a safe car for a 20 YO to drive with whatever the insurance company decides is FMV, less deductible.

No reimbursement for time or hassle.

When you get right down to actually proving something, it is never as simple as most think.

Agreed...we would have to tweak it to make it work but it can be done....without bringing back memories of the Gestapo...

Sure there will be those who find damn good forgeries, but just their knowing they will might asked will cut down on the blatant, in your face, criminal activities that the illegals shove in our faces every day.

My point exactly...thank you...

Illegals do more than cut lawns. They have to be able to be witnesses, offer testimony in court, etc.

Telling 300,000+ illegals in Phoenix that they now must avoid the police, never come forward as witnesses, never report crimes, and refuse to show up in court, is only shooting ourselves in the foot.

Why would you want people that have no respect for our laws, who've already broken our laws, to testify in our courts? It would seem to me they have zero credibility to begin with.

IIRC, the city of Charlotte, NC started checks of immigration
status on detainees and turning them over to ICE after a popular
couple in public education were victims of a car-crash by an illegal
(one died, one maimed).

We just had an illegal do a head-on crash (no real injuries) here
in Mid-Missouri; the illegal fled, but our highway patrol troopers
track him down.
This illegal may be the "poster child" for the anti-illegal measures
pushed by our Republican Governor Blunt and by the ME-TOO measures
being pushed by our Democratic AG Jay Nixon.

So, it took a cop being killed to make this happen.

Nevermind ordinary citizens. It's gonna take a family member of Congress that gets killed by an ILLEGAL before something gets done nationally.

John Fund complains about this in his book on vote fraud. somehow voting is more difficult and fraught with pitfalls than any other process in life, including work, driving, or cashing a check.
