Gay immigrants fight to join movement

Chicago's immigrant rights movement was on the verge of making history, and Nicole Perez was ready to lend her voice when she was told, with an angry sneer, that she was not welcome.

That was March 10, 2006. Perez and her lesbian partner, Xiomara Santana, had joined more than 100,000 demonstrators in the Loop for a march that kicked off a nationwide struggle for immigrant rights. Holding hands, the U.S.-born women looked at the Latino faces around them and were reminded of their own families.

Then an elderly man 2 feet away cursed at the couple, spitting out: "Why are you here?"

"I was like: 'We're all here for the same reason. This is as much my issue as it is yours,'" Perez, 25, said, recalling her tears of anger as others at the march laughingly trotted away from a gay and lesbian banner nearby for fear of being associated with the group.

Almost two years later, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community is pushing for more recognition in an immigration movement that includes the Catholic Church and others with conservative views about sexual orientation.

Local activists launched a Global Gays Initiative this month to highlight immigration concerns specific to their community and to provide legal aid and other assistance to gays, lesbians and others who have felt ostracized by mainstream immigrant groups.

Those organizations have paid scant attention to immigration battles in the lesbian and gay community, said Tania Unzueta, a Pilsen-based activist who highlights such stories as a host for Radio Arte, an FM station affiliated with the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum.

For instance, barely a word was spoken about the case of Victoria Arellano, a transgender woman with AIDS who arrived illegally from Mexico and died this summer in a detention center in

Transgender, illegal, Hispanic with AIDS? Had "she" survived, "she" would have been an honored SuperDelegate to the upcoming Democrat Party nominating convention.

The Victoria Arellano case highlighted shortcomings in medical treatment available to illegal immigrants awaiting deportation, especially those with HIV, activists said.

"...shortcomings in medical treatment..."? Why are we supposed to treat illegal aliens in this country? I know this was supposed to make me feel badly, but it didn't work. I have zero sympathy for anyone who is here illegally and then ties to bitch about some service that's denied to them. Why didn't they get treatment in Mexico instead of coming here illegally? Hmmm...I wonder.

" the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community"

"Community"? Only in America can bunches of sex deviates be considered as significant members of "society", whereas social misfits/maladjusted are not treated for their sickness, but rather are accommodated for their perversion.

Chicago's immigrant rights movement

Rights? How about the right to remain silent before they're put into a squad car?

an immigration movement that includes the Catholic Church

For these corrupt local Catholic parishes it is all about money and a dwindling flock. Their tax-exempt status must be immediately revoked.

It would take only a few prosecutions and asset confiscations to end that “movement” in jig time. The next sound you would hear would be the noise of congregations booting their radical leftist gadfly pastors out the church doors from sea to shining sea.

Why do you slander the Catholic church because they don't think the same way you do? The image of Janet Reno using the heavy hand of government to raid people's homes and separate families creeps me out. I would feel the same way if a conservative did it.

There is man's law and there is God's law. People who believe in God, care for one another. At least they are supposed to. I think homosexuality is wrong, but I would be equally wrong if I acted maliciously towards them.

It is one thing to dissagree, another thing is to intentionally want to hurt others.

There is a big difference between acting maliciously and enabling.

Sounds like you are into a "feel good" theology that overlooks a couple of very difficult facts. One is that there is only so much to go around ~ food, clothing, shelter, a chance to live in America, and one region of the world seeks to secure all the excess capacity to itself to the detriment of the other parts of the world.

Americans have worked hard for what they have, and it's a lot, and they share. Should they share only with Mexico or can a case be made that there are deserving people in China, India, Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and so forth who should receive an equal chance?

Immigration is an issue that effects every prosperous nation in the world. We do have to get things under control. Europe happens to have a lot of Muslim and African migrants. Nevertheless, they also accept the immigration because they need it. Spain & England are good examples of economies that continue to grow and continue to have a huge influx of immigrants.

In South Florida the only ones who are buying real estate are the Venezuelans coming to live here. I've met a few of Spaniards who look down on the British and South Americans living in Spain. It seems they don't think they are good enough. I guess it's just human nature.

Globalization is a reality. We need to do our children a favor and make sure we teach our children different languages, and that they know a little something about the rest of the world they are living in. Those who will likely be most prosperous are the ones who will know how to deal well internationally and will all walls of life. This is probably true even now.

Still waiting for them to dig up Barbara Jordan and make her a SuperDelegate...black, lesbian, and confined to a wheelchair before she passed away, a trifecta for the Dims.
