What’s up with tigers in California recently?

ACTON, Calif. (AP) A tiger at an animal sanctuary run by actress Tippi Hedren attacked a worker Monday, critically injuring him.
The 40-year-old man was bitten repeatedly at Shambala Preserve, on the edge of the Mojave Desert about 40 miles northeast of Los Angeles, said Art Marrujo, a county Fire Department dispatch supervisor.
The victim was flown to a hospital, said Harlan Boll, Hedren’s publicist.
“He’s going to be fine; we’re waiting to see how he reacts to the antibiotics,” said Boll, who had no immediate information on the circumstances around the attack.
Hedren starred in the Alfred Hitchcock horror classic “The Birds,” about a town that comes under attack by thousands of birds. She founded the preserve in the early 1970s and lives on the property.
The preserve is home to dozens of endangered big cats, most of them born in captivity and given up by circuses, zoos and private owners who could no longer care for the animals.

Maybe it was a visiting worker or rather a “guest worker”.
Well to some extent I agree. Shame on the idiots who run the SF zoo for letting a tiger get loose. I mean there really is only one serious thing to worry about in a zoo, and that is the big cats or bears getting out.
However once it was out and had attacked people I have no problem with the police shooting it dead. What else are they going to do? They have critically injured people bleeding to death, they need to get the tiger down, fast.
While it might theoretically have been nice to find a tiget keeper or tranq. gun, the situation was far too urgent to mess around.
The officers did the right thing and are to be commended. The zoo f’d up big time, and is now going to be sued. This is a multi-million dollar lawsuit, at least. Does the city own the zoo. If so the deep pockets theory kicks in and the numbers go up.
Should be fun to watch.
i wonder if the same as a bear, where if you lie still and play dead they leave you alone.
Local (Knoxville) news is now saying four got loose, but only one was put down.
Who goes to the zoo on Christmas?
Can’t blame the tiger for trying to escape from San Fransicko.
I’m having trouble seeing the humor that some on this thread seem to find in this incident. Somebody help me out here.
I'll put money on animal liberation front terrorism.
Intentional? What dumba$$ thinks this could be intentional?!
It sounds like something an animal right terrorist would do to make a point.
This is San Francisco. They have nuts who would be willing to set tigers on innocent people to make a political point.
Ditto
The guys with the guns stopped him from doing what tigers do. Shoot him again!
Because people that say things dont’t think. The Internet lets anyone say anything.
I have been in that zoo with my kids. It’s a nice zoo.
It’s not funny when something terrible happens in a family environment, and someone is killed and many kids are traumatized.
I assume the SF Zoo is, like most zoos, either a government entity or a non-profit -- with all the related ills as a workplace.
In other words, it is run by a bureaucracy -- which probably lost any sense of professionalism long ago. Instead, they have become highly political -- in terms of internal politics and the liberal worldview they promote (especially enviromentalism).
Interestingly, though, zoos and the PETA people are sworn enemies. Which makes sense when you think about it...
Most zoo managers understand that keeping their job is their primary responsibility. Not expanding traffic, nor lowering costs -- except in the face of lower traffic.
This leads to massive ennui among the staff. And frequent mistakes by people who aren't motivated to do their job.
Animals die because of them. And, sometimes, people do, too.
Being Christmas, I wonder if the regular handler was on vacation.
