"I was a Huckabee supporter until about a week ago," said Brian Wright, a Fort Madison resident. "And then I heard his comment about Pakistan today."
Wright asked Thompson a question about the political implications of the Benazir Bhutto assassination and how it will affect the presidential race, saying that he once supported "another candidate" but was now considering Thompson.
"I have no idea of the political implications of that question," Thompson said during the customary question and answer session after his stump speech. He went to add that knowledge of international affairs, however, is crucial. "We shouldn't have to wait until some disaster happens - either at home or abroad - to be reminded of how important this is," he said.
"I do know what the ramifications of having a president who doesn't understand the nature of the world that we live in are, and that would be a dangerous situation."

I would feel secure with Fred leading the way. He wont
jump into off the cuff remarks...foolish instant conclusions.
He looks into something before providing an answer and the answer he gives is what he believes in ..not one that will buy votes.
Not me. He has no real executive experience, and the way in which he's mismanaged his campaign doesn't suggest that he has the best of judgment.
When are people going to wake up to the FACTS:
Mike Huckabee is a PREACHER and nothing more..oops , he also was a LIBERAL governor..
FRED THOMPSON is a true CONSERVATIVE leader...nothing more...oops , he was a US senator and has something Huckabee doesn’t,..intelligence and EXPERIENCE on foreign affairs.

FOREIGN POLICY experience is what is needed in this dangerous world right now, not executive experience. Besides, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton both had executive experience.

The problem is that Fred doesn’t really have any foreign policy experience, either.
He was a counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations committee for exactly one year (1980-81), but I don’t think he has any experience with governmental foreign relations beyond that. One and a half terms in the senate just isn’t enough time to accrue any real experience.
Right: Unlike Willard "Mitt" Romney who didn't know he'd had illegal alien groundskeepers for years, claims that the $50 abortions and homosexual marriage are somebody else's fault, has flip-flopped on EVERY major issue one can think of, and is trying to buy his way into the oval office.

Senator Thompson also served as a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the National Security Working Group, which observes and monitors executive branch negotiations with foreign governments. In 1980; he was special counsel, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations 1980-1981; special counsel, Senate Intelligence Committee. Fred was also Chairman of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice's Intelligence Advisory Board for several years before he became a candidate for the White House. Senator Thompson to Represent U.S. at Asian Conference on Security Issues
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) will represent the United States this week at an International conference on Asian Security Issues. Organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), “Asia Security Conference: The Shangri-La Dialogue” will bring together fifteen defense ministers from Asia-Pacific countries, United States and European defense officials, and leading independent analysts.
Among those participating in the May 31-June 2 conference in Singapore will be U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, British Defense Secretary Geoffrey Hoon, Chinese Director of Foreign Affairs Zhan Maohai, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, and India Minister of Defense George Fernandez.
Issues that the conference will focus on include managing terrorist threats in Southeast Asia, non-proliferation challenges in Asia, United States’ strategy in the region, Europe’s role in Asian security, and China’s military doctrine and security.
“This will be an opportunity for us to reiterate our support for our allies in the Asia-Pacific region who are helping in the war on terrorism and to share ideas about the future of that effort,” Senator Thompson said.
Thompson, the senior Republican on the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and a member of the Intelligence Committee, has been a leader on national security issues and addressing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
