Mystery Container Washes Up On Scottish Beach
BBC News ^ | 29 Dec 2007 | BBC

Experts are trying to identify a huge metal container that has been washed up on a beach in the Western Isles.

The tank, which is 27m high, has no markings and is thought to have fallen from a ship before being washed up on the west of Benbecula.

It was discovered by a dog walker on Poll Na Crann beach - known locally as Stinky Bay - near Griminish.

Stornoway Coastguard is using two numbers on the container to try to find out where the item has come from.

Alasdair MacEachen, assistant director of environmental services at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar told BBC Scotland: "It's certainly generated a fair bit of interest with people walking on the beach or just travelling along the road, because you can actually see it from the main road along the west side of Benbecula.

"It would be standing almost 30m tall and really looks pretty much like a silo. I think it's a bulk storage tank of some sort, possibly for storing some liquids."

Probably filled to the brim with illegal Mexican aliens.

It just drifted off course.

It was supposed to wash up on the beach in North Carolina :)

I wouldn't hold my breath on this one - however dog walkers at 'stinky bay' have been known to sympathize with anti Bush tree huggers!

It’s just another Nazi moon rocket. Those things are popping up all the time. It was hot stuff before they came up with their antigravity drive but now I don’t think you could get a buck a pound for it. Saucers, that’s the way to go is what I told von Braun, but would he listen? Nooooo.

From it’s shape, I’d say some kind of mixing chamber or farm apparatus. Maybe a real big still!!

"Maybe a lost Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster?

Uh no, SRB's are 27' in diameter and 155' long and white. I thought it might be a segment from a recent Delta launch though but google images proved me wrong. ;-)

If this washed ashore in Scotland, maybe it is a hypodermic for Keith Richards. Just stick a needle in the end and you have a party-size container.

5000 lbs seems to be about right.

If the weight is in pounds, it would greatly reduce the possibilities for location of origin.

Pluto

Pluto was Pipeline Under The Ocean, vital arteries that pumped millions of gallons of fuel from Britain to Allied forces in France. Two lines were built, codenamed Dumbo and Bambi. Pumping stations were disguised as ice cream shops, garages and bungalows. The sea bed cables were laid by 30ft diameter Conun drums pulled by tugs. This is one of more than 1,000 secret photographs of the pipeline operation newly released and available to be viewed free at The National Archives in Kew.
