Despite the risks she knew she was taking, I hadnt seen her look so happy for years. The old fire was in her eyes. She cried as she got off the plane.
I was the only journalist among about 15 family, political colleagues and friends on the open top of her campaign bus that night when two bombs went off. We were incredibly lucky to escape. When a woman tried to steer me towards an ambulance I realised I was covered with the blood of some of the 140 victims. ... I will never forget seeing Benazir on her bus, like Boadicea riding her chariot, standing at the open front, refusing the entreaties of her security to stay behind the armour-plated shield. Her cheeks were flushed with excitement and a speckled dove with an injured leg perched on her shoulder.
This is why I came back, she said. Look at the crowds, the women, the children who have come from all over. These are the real people of Pakistan, not the extremists.

Bhutto sure is getting the Lady Diana treatment now that she is history.
Enjoying her 72 virgins, do doubt.
do = no
I think she is a heroine.
Welcome to FR. I think you have chosen an appropriate Screen Name.
She had her good points, but she was not the savior of Democracy she has been made out to be in recent days.
Of course that is correct, that there is probably some exaggeration of good points and downplaying her less than good points.
That said, it is too bad for her. She may have been a good ally for us if she could have been in a position of pwer there.
The MIddle East and the Near Middle East (and Muslims in general) need symbols of rationality to rally around and to believe in. The Extremists have a monopoly on passion and martyrism, as anyone who opposes them is usually eliminated before they can gather any kind of following.
Maybe her myth will be strong enough to tilt the balance.
this, apparently, is not a good omen.
Despite all of the negative comments here, she certainly was a brave woman. This was certainly not the first time that she had been targeted for murder.
Not to say Mushie has done enough to help that hell hole.......and he isn't pretty.Interpol had a warrant for her arrest for goodness sakes with about five countries involved in her money laundering.
No, she did not deserve to die in this manner.
When she was PM she supported the Taliban in Afghanistan and gave them a foothold in Pakistan. She later withdrew that support and now those same snakes have killed her.
Musharraf either can't or won't bomb the snake pits and our troops are fighting a dying for the mistakes of these sorry people.
So I don't see this woman as a hero, martyr, saint or a goddess out to save the Pakistan people. Now, the country is ripped apart, burned , trashed and the people she loved so much have a worse life than before her brave return.
Not only has she damaged Pakistan she has made it worse for our troops and the world due to the Nuclear weapons in Pakistan.
She is dead now. Everything will be okay for you.
US SOPS went in and secured all the nukes.
No, it won’t be alright for me. Take your blinders off and you might decide it’s not alright for you either.
Sounds like a good pacifier, don't ya think?
No, no one should die like this - but she had a spotty past, including her building up of the Taliban when she was in power before
and you are spot on - Musharraf has done more good for Pakistan...
He has also been a better friend to us, and at great personal risk - for years.
Now we are sending Special Forces into Pakistan - this is a deal worked out with him...and is the only way we'll get rid of the Taliban - kill them in their nests - stop them from hitting on both sides of the border only to scoot back and forth at will...
Afghanistan will go on for decades unless we can get the barbarians in Pakistan
Right. Thanks for explaining that to me.
