Next thing you know, they’ll be telling businesses who they can or cannot hire.

I agree with you totally but you are swimming against a rip tide.

Bad in so many ways, but the worst of all:
A source of revenue (tobacco taxes) is severely restricted. This would not be so bad, by itself, but the revenue from this source has ALREADY been dedicated to certain programs, which shall then have to be funded from the general revenue sources, either reducing that amount available to other programs, or instituting a cry for “higher taxes” on other revenue sources.
Illinois pretty much gets the kind of government they deserve.

Sorry, I'm tired of smelling coworkers smoke just because they don't care about anyone else but there nasty habit. I can't agree with you in this situation. Cigarettes kill plain and simple. If people would be responsible about it this wouldn't be an issue, but most are not.

Smoking bans are just turning up the heat on the frog. However, there are quite a few Americans who are not frogs, and for these the result is increased disrespect for the law. That’s simmering on the back burner of the same stove.

It is a trampling of individual rights, the right to property. It is more dangerous than mere business property rights.
You are correct to point out that the debate is about property rights.
We are all guests on other peoples property, we should follow the rules of the host, or not visit.
Those that talk about being annoyed by smoke are really saying they are annoyed by individuals having property rights.

Is this just a ban on smoking in public places, such as bars, restaurants, businesses, public builidngs and the like? If so, this is kind of old hat. Such bans are in place all over the country, you know.

I agree the government should not pass laws affecting property rights.
Here are the latest poll results:
The statewide smoking ban is ...
good for Illinois. 36.1%
bad for Illinois. 63.9%
Total votes: 310
Results not scientific

Ohio has had this law for a year now. You will see attitudes change overnight come Junuary 1st. It is not a good thing. So sorry that you have to go through this like the people in Ohio. There is no mediation any more, and that’s what makes people angry about government and each other. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Using a public opinion poll to gauge whether this is all on the level isn’t much better. The premise alone is pretty twisted.

not good governmentIllinois is a blue state, you have no reason to expect good government, just crony government.

Does the Illinois law require signs posted at every public location with a phone number for reporting your fellow citizen to the State (just like Ohio)?
