British Airways has placed a massive order of 790 planes for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner which is yet to be launched. This is a move that should exalt the aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, and place it well beyond its European competitor, Airbus.
Boeing hopes to test the 787 Dreamliner before March next year and expects to start delivering planes in December, the same year.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a mid-sized, wide-body, twin engine jet airliner currently in production by Boeing Commercial Airplanes and scheduled to enter service in November 2008. It will carry between 210 and 330 passengers depending on variant and seating configuration. Boeing has stated that it will be more fuel-efficient than earlier Boeing airliners, and will also be the first major airliner to use composite materials for most of its construction. [via Wikipedia]
There were reports stating that BA had deserted Boeing for A380, but that seems to be quite distant from reality, although the airline company has placed orders for the jumbo flight.
BA placing multiple orders on the untested and yet-to-be-launched product shows the kind of trust it has on the aircraft manufacturer.
Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales for Europe, Russia and Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes said - "This order is a vote of confidence from one of the world's leading global network carriers in the 787's unprecedented performance.”
If true then this order roughly doubles the backlog on the 787.
Should mean a better economy for WA if the politicians don't kill Boeing first.
I think they meant 79 not 790! Still a good size order.
What’s one of the 787s estimated to go for? That’s a huge order.
NEW YORK/LONDON, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday that British Airways (BAY.L: Quote, Profile, Research) finalised an order for 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, an order valued at $4.4 billion at list prices.
British Airways also has options for 18 more 787 planes and purchase rights for an additional 10, Boeing said in a statement.

CHICAGO (AP) Boeing Co. said Thursday it finalized a deal with British Airways, notching 790 orders for its long-awaited 787 Dreamliner plane during the last three years.
British Airways’ order for 24 Dreamliners gives the plane one of the industry’s most successful launches ever_ even though the airliner has yet to take flight.
The Chicago-based aerospace company expects to fly the first 787 around the end of the first quarter of 2008 and begin deliveries in late November or December. It expects to deliver 109 airplanes in 2009.
That’s gotta be a misprint.According to wikipedia,BA currently operates 121 jumbos.
Someone may have started their holiday celebration a little early. Those numbers don’t look right.
Looks like the translation was lost somewhere. The BA order makes a total of 790 787 orders placed in total... pretty amazing for a plane that has yet to fly!

If I were you I’d ask the admin to pull the thread.
Yup, and hope that no one noticed my error.
Curious how stress/age fractures will begin showing up. The recent grounding of F15 A-D’s come to mind.
I wonder how much our weak dollar helped in getting this order?
Hey, I saw it posted on the Internet!! By a Professional newsman.
(Hey, I should have caught that myself. What I get for tossing one last thread before bed.)
To quote the great Lazamataz:
“Proudly posting without reading articles since 1997.”
I stand corrected - BA did NOT place an order for about $40 Billion worth of 787’s.
Still, as OCC pointed out, its a big deal to push Boeing's 787 to nearly 800 planes before it has even flown, and to push it into Europe, home of the AirBust.
AirBust, the best plane a money grubbing Socialist-committee job-creation program can build.
Good catch, ya’ll. And thanks to whomever flagged the Admin Moderator to update the title.
(Am I allowed to be nice to an Admin, even during the Holidays?)
