The same thing struck me then as now, while it may be humble to disavow ambition Thompson must have a pretty high impression of himself to believe the times are calling him. His statement on why he is running even includes the line: "I don't know if they ever asked George Washington a question like this."
So what is his motivation?

I usually don't like posting these things but I think this Brit needs a bit of education on Thompson. He isn't entirely hostile and it doesn't really matter but let us tell him why we support Fred and why is refreshing that he isn't rushing to reinvent himself to trick himself into the Presidency like so many of his fellow travelers.

I think it is self-evident if this Simon person researches FDT.

So what is his motivation? I wouldn't expect somebody who writes for the Guardian to understand it.

That Thompson doesn’t seem like an overly ambitious sack of **** is part of why I like him so much.

WE are "the times", and WE called him to duty. Understand this, Senator Thompson had no inclination or thought to run for POTUS until WE made enough of a fuss, and a loud enough fuss, that he had to pay attention and take stock.
Our Country is in dire straits, and for some of that, I lay blame on foreigners like you Britains.
So easily you give up, and give in. Now look, you are a socialist Nation, a slave to the will and actions of foreigners, dependent on other Nations for your very survival...again! Tell me, can you even fart without first getting permission from your EU masters?
Your brainwashing justifications are so deep, I know you can't understand this. So, at least, leave us alone, get out of our politics, and mind the order of your own house...such that it is.
We love you like the Brothers and Cousins you are, but, this is our battle, our calling, our Country in need. You just can't understand it.

How sad that Britain can no longer produce patriots. No, he wouldn’t understand Fred’s reasoning.

Actually, this brit need an education on George Washington. GW did not want command for any political reason, and he was at odds with congress all the time over congress failing to fund the troops. Sound familiar? Yep, GW considered resigning over the lack of funding and he was a strong proponent of forcing congress to honor its commitments.
Gee, I’ve heard these sentiments before........

Great Briton produces some great patriots, this is just not one of them.
Keep in mind, many “conservative or tory” politicians in the UK are almost as liberal as the Democrats are here. There is no honest comparison between the two countries as to conservative and liberal.

Perhaps the idea wouldn't have occurred to da blokes who have to be told they are politically impoverished.

He is a leftist. He is from the UK. I think he is not so subtly denigrating Fred because Fred can act. The reference to “motivation” is meant in smarmy pun as “motivation” for an acting scene. I would not waste any more time with this person.

Have Leftists and liberals a very low impression of themselves?Just wondering!
Seen from france i have a high impression of Fred THOMSON as a tough, sensible and reliable man...The Guardian is right somewhere!
He seems different than many crooks we can see among our political leaders.

So what is his motivation? To serve the republic by assuring that the quality of person from whom it selects its next president is at least as good as himself. And if the Republic finds someone else for the job, to return happily to private life.

Yes, and the consequence of growing old is you don’t have enough strength to climb out of the water even before it starts boiling.
