A volcano has erupted in southern Chile, sending a column of smoke miles into the sky.

have been forced to flee ^

Lava is spurting from the mouth of the active Llaima volcano, in the Conguillio National Park, and the surrounding area is covered in ash.

More than 150 tourists and park workers have been evacuated and the emergency services have been placed on "early alert" should tectonic activity increase.

There are no reports of any injuries. Before the eruption, people in the towns closest to the volcano said they heard loud noises underground.

The Llaima is among the most active of the dozens of volcanoes in Chile. It erupted last May, but its most recent major explosion was in 1994.

It is not yet clear whether this eruption will be sustained, but authorities are drawing up plans to stage wider evacuations if necessary.

The town of Melipeuco, home to at least 5,000 people, is eight miles away. The nearest city is Temuco, more than 50 miles away.

The Llaima volcano, which translates as "Blood Veins", is 10,253-foot high.

That’s going to cost Chile a fortune in Carbon Credits.

I think volcanoes do more damage to the ozone than to anything else. Meanwhile, the ash aloft will reflect a miniscule percentage of sunlight, actually cooling the areas of earth under it.

Suck it, Al. THIS is MY climate change!

I agree. What's big Al going to say about this? Maybe he's going to shake his fist at God. LOL

Btw, your cat is beautiful! Very pretty markings. :o)

This has to be kicking the hypothesis about “anthropogenic” global warming in the butt.

The globe wasn’t getting warmer, seems this particular spot was ALREADY pretty warm.

Hot enough to melt rocks, anyway.

This is the way the planet vents its internal heat, you know. The internal temperature of the planet is kept at relatively high levels for two primary reasons.

One is that tremendous pressure, as the planet core is approached more and more closely, resulting in converting this huge well of gravitional energy into heat.

The other is the continuing radioactive decay of certain unstable elements in this molten mantle, which generates even more heat. While there are not that many molecules of any one given element packed in any one place, the cumulative effect of of all the radioactive decay products, and the energy released, can add up to a pretty respectable number across the entire core of the earth.

Then there is the factor of the earth’s mantle crust being something of an insulating blanket, and the heat only escapes when a volcano, or some similar vent, is opened.

Thanks. I miss him sometimes. Had to give him up because my wife is deathly allergic. He was a rotten, self-absorbed cuss, but definitely entertaining.

so how much effect does this have on global warming?

It could cause increased precipitation if it blew big enough.

Actually, it could have an effect if it puts up enough ash. The big Pinatubo eruption in Philipines (which closed our Subic bay base) clearly cooled the globe a few tenths of a degree for a year or so. Right afterwards, the "Warmers" were willing to bet that 4 years after would be warmer than the year after -- and they were certainly right -- but not from AGW -- from the light-reflecting nature of the dust thrown high up where it can take a year or two to settle out.

Tambora in 1816 caused the "year without a summer" in new England. Toba, 50,000 years ago, darn near wiped us (humans) out. Current theory is that we were reduced to a few 10s of thousands, causing an evolutionary bottleneck.

Contrary to another post, however, the actual heat from the magma release is a spit in the ocean in the global heat balance.

One volcano, or one magma release, is indeed a “spit in the ocean”. But counting all the volcanic releases this planet has undergone in the last couple of billion years, adds up to an awful lot of spit. Probably, heat releases through geothermal superheating of liquid water, and a geyser eruption, accounts for more transfer of energy from the deeper reaches to the atmosphere than magma release.

But remember magma release is what built a lot of the mountain chains, and is still a factor in creation of islands in the sea, similar to how Hawaii was formed.

The heat balance of the earth is moderated by how much is radiated away during the night (earthshine), on the side of the world turned away from the sun, as compared to how much is absorbed by absorption of radiation from the sun on the side in daylight. This could probably be calculated, or at least a SWAG number could be put down for it, but it would involve a lot of factors, some of which seems not to have been considered by the “global warming” prophets.
