FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

FOOTBALL FACTS

Tonight we'll finish up with Football Facts by looking at the Super Bowl.

America's SUPER BOWL

In professional American football, the Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL). It and its ancillary festivities constitute Super Bowl Sunday, which over the years has become the most-watched U.S. television broadcast of the year, and has become likened to a de facto U.S. national holiday. In addition, many popular singers and musicians have performed during the Super Bowl's pre-game and halftime ceremonies. This is also the second-largest U.S. food consumption day, following Thanksgiving.

The Super Bowl was first played on January 15, 1967 as part of an agreement between the NFL and its younger rival, the American Football League (AFL) in which each league's championship team would play each other in an "AFL-NFL World Championship Game". After the leagues merged in 1970, the Super Bowl became the NFL's championship game.

The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year it was held since the NFL season extends beyond New Year's Eve.

The Super Bowl was created as part of the merger agreement between the National Football League (NFL) and its competitive rival, the American Football League (AFL). After its inception in 1920, the NFL fended off several rival leagues before the AFL began play in 1960. The intense competitive war for players and fans led to serious merger talks between the two leagues in 1966, culminating in a merger announcement on June 8, 1966.

The winning team gets the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named for the coach of the Green Bay Packers, who won the first two Super Bowl games and 3 of the 5 preceding NFL championships (1961-62, 1965). Following his death in September 1970, the trophy was then named the Vince Lombardi Trophy, first awarded as such at Super Bowl V in Miami.

In the history of the Super Bowl, the following "firsts" have yet to occur:

* While Super Bowl XLI was the first to feature rain, there has yet to be snowy conditions during the game.

* An all-wild card matchup, i.e., teams who failed to win their divisions. Eight wild card teams (since the 1970 merger) have won conference titles, but seven of the eight have come from the same conference (the AFC). The 1975 Dallas Cowboys remain the lone NFC wild card team to win a conference title.

* A shutout. Super Bowl VII with Miami Dolphins kicker Garo Yepremian's blocked field goal attempt is perhaps the most dramatic example of a near shutout (the Washington Redskins scored their only points on that play, with 2:07 remaining in the game). The fewest number of points scored in a Super Bowl is 3, put up by those same Dolphins in the previous year's Super Bowl.

* While many kickoffs have been returned for a touchdown, a punt has yet to be returned for a touchdown.

* A team literally having "home field advantage". The closest instances to this have been Super Bowl XIV being played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena near the Rams' then-home of Los Angeles and Super Bowl XIX being played at Stanford Stadium which is a short distance from the 49ers' home stadium, Candlestick Park.

* Overtime. The closest instances to overtime play were in:
o Baltimore's Jim O'Brien's winning field goal with :05 left in Super Bowl V.
o Tennessee's Kevin Dyson stopped one yard short of a tying touchdown as time expired for Super Bowl XXXIV.
o Two game-winning field goals by former New England Patriot's kicker Adam Vinatieri in Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXVI.

I hope you've enjoyed Football Facts. That's all folks.

Armed Forces Bowl Honors America’s Military

FORT WORTH, Texas (Army News Service, Jan. 2, 2008) - While most of the country prepared to ring in the New Year, a record crowd of almost 41,000 filled Amon G. Carter Stadium Dec. 31 to watch the Air Force Falcons battle the UC-Berkeley Golden Bears in the 5th edition of the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.

Air Force dominated the first half with three unanswered touchdowns. But California rallied under the leadership of freshman quarterback Kevin Riley to defeat the Falcons 42 to 36 in a wild and entertaining game.

The action on the field, though, was merely the capstone to a multi-day event devoted to honoring the men and women who have and will serve their nation as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.

Attendees got an opportunity to fly simulated Navy fighter aircraft, steer a Coast Guard cutter, try on Army gear or challenge a Marine to a pull-up competition in the Armed Forces Adventure area. (FYI - The smart money was on the Marines.)

As game time approached, fans were treated to a parachute demonstration by the Air Force Academy’s parachute team “Wings of Blue” and flyovers by Army and Marine combat helicopters and an Air Force B-2 bomber. Throughout the game, each branch was honored and recognized with military bands playing their respective official songs.

The highlight of the game’s halftime festivities was the presentation of the Great American Patriot Award to Secretary of the Army Pete Geren.

“For the past three decades, Secretary Geren has been involved with Armed Forces-related activities as a U. S. Congressman and Department of Defense employee,” said Jim Breen, chairman of the bowl’s military affairs committee. “In honoring him, we recognize his leadership and congratulate him on his service to our country.”

Immediately after receiving his award, Secretary Geren administered the oath of enlistment to 100 recruits representing all branches of the military.

Among the 40 Soldiers sworn-in by the secretary was future Army biochemical operations specialist Analuisa Vrducco, 17, from Dallas. Vrducco, who leaves for basic training this summer, was somewhat overwhelmed by her opportunity to take the oath from Geren in person. “This meant everything to me,” she said.

After shaking hands with the recruits, Secretary Geren noted that “...it’s always inspiring to see fine young men and women step up and join our military.”

Looking ahead, Secretary Geren thanked the troops serving around the world and wished them and their families a Happy New Year in 2008.

“Because of you, we are a nation that lives in freedom, cherishing the liberties you give to us through your efforts and sacrifice.”

(Lt. Col. William Thurmond is the public affairs officer for the Army Air Force Exchange Service.)

U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Tour Underway

High school senior football players await their fate as the Army travels the nation to name 84 players for its All-American Bowl, an all-star game held January 5, in San Antonio, Texas.

Those selected for the bowl will follow in the footsteps of some of the country’s top college and professional players and have the elite opportunity to highlight the skills and values they share with Soldiers in the United States Army.

Players are selected by a committee of national recruiting experts and are placed on the East or West team. The 138 stops on the selection tour bring Army representatives to each player’s high school, where a game day jersey is presented before the player’s peers, parents, coaches, athletic directors and principals. This important opportunity allows the Army to communicate the important tie between athletes and Soldiers— their strength, dedication, teamwork and values.

To track all of the Selection Tour stops through early December, visit www.usarmyallamericanbowl.com.

As an added bonus, the Army will inaugurate its U.S. Army All-American Marching Band program, which recognizes the integral role band members play in the traditional, high-school football experience. Ninety-one outstanding marching musicians from across the country were selected to participate in the 2008 All-American Bowl, and each will have the opportunity to showcase his or her talents before a national audience.

As a tribute to our men and women in uniform, more than 80 Soldiers from across the country will be honored as part of the week-long schedule of festivities for the 2008 Army All-American Bowl. These Soldier Heroes, who are doing the “heavy lifting” for our nation,” are the strength of the nation - the ultimate instrument of national resolve. These brave men and women represent the hundreds of thousands of Soldiers currently serving around the world. The honored Soldiers and football players will be paired and participate in a series of events together during game week, illustrating their shared ideals of leadership, courage and strength on and off the field. In additions, Soldiers will be honored during pre-game activities for their commitment and service.

Sierra Vista'S FIRST BABY IN 2008: Girl arrives quick, with dad in Iraq

By Dana Cole
Herald/Review

Published on Wednesday, January 02, 2008

SIERRA VISTA — Asiyah Ariyana-Nicole Botley, Sierra Vista’s first baby in 2008, arrived at 6:04 a.m. Tuesday.

Tyesha Preston, an Army specialist, holds her new baby, Asiyah Ariyana-Nicole Botley, Tuesday at the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center. Asiyah was born at 6:04 a.m. on New Year’s Day, becoming the city’s first baby born in 2008. (Mark Levy-Herald/Review)

And she came in a big hurry.

Four minutes after the baby’s mother, Tyesha Preston, was placed on her hospital bed in the Maternal Child unit at Sierra Vista Regional Health Center, Asiyah was born. Dr. Peter Van Oosten was on call, but didn’t make it in time to assist with the baby’s birth.

Charge nurse Jennifer Alston delivered the baby girl, with Van Oosten arriving shortly after she was born.

Dedrick Botley, the baby’s father, is a sergeant in the Army, currently stationed in Iraq. He deployed with the 11th Signal Brigade on Dec. 9 and expects to be in Iraq for 15 months. Upon his return, he and Tyesha plan to be married. Asiyah has a 2-year-old brother, Amare.

Currently stationed at Fort Huachuca, Preston is a specialist with the U.S. Army Intelligence Center. She plans to get out of the Army in April after four years service.

“I’ll be on maternity leave for six weeks,” Preston said. “When I’m out of the Army, I’m hoping to get a job at the daycare on Fort Huachuca.”

Preston’s son goes to that daycare, and she would like a job where she can work with children.

Preston went into labor at 5 a.m. and was driven to the hospital by a good friend, Willie Cook. She was immediately whisked into the emergency department upon her arrival.

“We checked her in triage and saw she was ready to have the baby,” Alston said. “We literally ran her into this room. The baby was born exactly four minutes after we placed her on this bed.”

Despite a slight complication in Asiyah’s presentation — her left arm presented at the same time as her head and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her arm and neck — the delivery went smoothly, Alston said.

“Miss Preston did really well, even with the compound presentation,” the nurse said, praising mom. “She pushed when she needed to and was helpful through the delivery.”

Preston said her experience at Sierra Vista Regional Health Center “was absolutely wonderful.

“The staff was great. My hospital room was very comfortable,” she said.

As for dad, he and Preston have been busy text messaging each other since Asiyah’s arrival.

“He is so excited about having a little girl,” Preston said. “He says this is his best New Year’s ever, even though he’s in Iraq.”

Preston’s mother will be coming from Virginia to help with the baby.
