FReeper Canteen ~ Football Facts Thursday ~ 3 January 2008

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

FOOTBALL FACTS

Tonight we'll finish up with Football Facts by looking at the Super Bowl.

America's SUPER BOWL

In professional American football, the Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL). It and its ancillary festivities constitute Super Bowl Sunday, which over the years has become the most-watched U.S. television broadcast of the year, and has become likened to a de facto U.S. national holiday. In addition, many popular singers and musicians have performed during the Super Bowl's pre-game and halftime ceremonies. This is also the second-largest U.S. food consumption day, following Thanksgiving.

The Super Bowl was first played on January 15, 1967 as part of an agreement between the NFL and its younger rival, the American Football League (AFL) in which each league's championship team would play each other in an "AFL-NFL World Championship Game". After the leagues merged in 1970, the Super Bowl became the NFL's championship game.

The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year it was held since the NFL season extends beyond New Year's Eve.

The Super Bowl was created as part of the merger agreement between the National Football League (NFL) and its competitive rival, the American Football League (AFL). After its inception in 1920, the NFL fended off several rival leagues before the AFL began play in 1960. The intense competitive war for players and fans led to serious merger talks between the two leagues in 1966, culminating in a merger announcement on June 8, 1966.

The winning team gets the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named for the coach of the Green Bay Packers, who won the first two Super Bowl games and 3 of the 5 preceding NFL championships (1961-62, 1965). Following his death in September 1970, the trophy was then named the Vince Lombardi Trophy, first awarded as such at Super Bowl V in Miami.

In the history of the Super Bowl, the following "firsts" have yet to occur:

* While Super Bowl XLI was the first to feature rain, there has yet to be snowy conditions during the game.

* An all-wild card matchup, i.e., teams who failed to win their divisions. Eight wild card teams (since the 1970 merger) have won conference titles, but seven of the eight have come from the same conference (the AFC). The 1975 Dallas Cowboys remain the lone NFC wild card team to win a conference title.

* A shutout. Super Bowl VII with Miami Dolphins kicker Garo Yepremian's blocked field goal attempt is perhaps the most dramatic example of a near shutout (the Washington Redskins scored their only points on that play, with 2:07 remaining in the game). The fewest number of points scored in a Super Bowl is 3, put up by those same Dolphins in the previous year's Super Bowl.

* While many kickoffs have been returned for a touchdown, a punt has yet to be returned for a touchdown.

* A team literally having "home field advantage". The closest instances to this have been Super Bowl XIV being played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena near the Rams' then-home of Los Angeles and Super Bowl XIX being played at Stanford Stadium which is a short distance from the 49ers' home stadium, Candlestick Park.

* Overtime. The closest instances to overtime play were in:
o Baltimore's Jim O'Brien's winning field goal with :05 left in Super Bowl V.
o Tennessee's Kevin Dyson stopped one yard short of a tying touchdown as time expired for Super Bowl XXXIV.
o Two game-winning field goals by former New England Patriot's kicker Adam Vinatieri in Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXVI.

I hope you've enjoyed Football Facts. That's all folks.

Remember, the Canteen is a family friendly place. We welcome the military, our allies, and their families.
Continued prayers for the success and completion of your mission. Prayers for you safe return home.

Well we had little bit of rain and sleet this morning. It was below freezing so there were a few problems with slick spots.

What? No prediction on how good/bad the half-time show will be?

Hard to say. I'm not a big Tom Petty fan. I liked the Traveling Wilburys, but that's the only album of his I own. (I do remember "Don't Come Around Here No More" being in heavy rotation on U-68, the UHF answer to MTV for all the poor Brooklynites who couldn't get cable.)

Yeah, it's no fun if it's too easy. You want to the others to put up some resistance.
... at least, that's what my ex-girlfriend used to say...

A Real Hero
Since yesterday gave us the occasion to mention poor Cindy Sheehan, we thought it worth highlighting a more uplifting story of a parent's response to a son's death in Iraq. Nathan Krissoff, a Marine first lieutenant, died in Anbar in December 2006 at 25, prompting his 61-year-old father, Bill, an orthopedic surgeon, to join up, reports the Union of Grass Valley, Calif.:

Now the fallen Marine's father is committed to a mission, one that carries even more than the memory of Nathan. Krissoff's youngest son, Austin, is also an officer in the Corps.

"Both my sons were hugely affected by the events of 9/11, and Nate was proud to serve in the Marines, as Austin is," Krissoff says. "I share their views."

So he is closing his Truckee practice, leaving his Reno home, relocating to San Diego and taking on a brand new persona, that of Navy Lt. Commander.

Though 19 years over the Navy's official age limit, Dr. Krissoff will serve as a Navy surgeon for three years.

"My interest in Navy medicine," Krissoff says, "was because they take care of Marines."

Like Mrs. Sheehan, Dr. Krissoff met with the president, though that is where the similarity ends:

Because 42 is the Navy's age cutoff for medical officer enlistees, Krissoff was initially told that joining would be a difficult and lengthy process. So he pressed the issue and asked for the needed waiver from the highest authority he could find - President Bush.

Krissoff met Bush in August at an American Legion convention in Reno. . . . Krissoff says Bush asked each family what he could do for them.

Krissoff told the president he wanted to serve. . . . Krissoff says he pressed Bush about the matter with humor.

" 'Sir, I'd like to serve but they told me I'm too old, but I'm younger than you, sir,' " Krissoff says, telling the story with a rare grin.

Thanks to White House intercession, Krissoff quickly got an age waiver. If only he got as much attention as a certain antiwar malcontent.

And, how can I not mark today of all days?

Today is the birthday of the greatest author of the 20th Century:

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, CBE (January 3rd, 1892 – September 2nd, 1973) was an English philologist, writer and university professor, best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon language (Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon) from 1925 to 1945, and Merton Professor of English language and literature from 1945 to 1959. He was a devout Roman Catholic. Tolkien was a close friend of C. S. Lewis; they were both members of the informal literary discussion group known as the Inklings. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on March 28th, 1972.
