January, 2008 - Apple's Awesome Market Share Gains

Apple's market share gains in December for the Mac and iPhone are impressive.  However, for the last days of December, the numbers are nothing short of spectacular.

First, the month-to-month numbers:

Product November Share December Share
Mac (all lines) 6.80% 7.31%
iPhone .09% .12%

(Please note these numbers are a percentage of visitors accessing sites across our network.  Please go to our home page to see our methodology.)

Great numbers.  Apple's market share rose 7.5% for the Mac and 33% for the iPhone in a single month.

However, the really good news for Apple came at the end of the month.  For the last two days of December, Apple had the following numbers:

Product December 30-31 Share
Mac (all lines) 8.01%
iPhone .17%

This represents a phenomenal increase of 18% from November for the Mac and 89% for the iPhone.  In addition, the iPhone has been taking off in France and the other countries it has been launched in, including an amazing .27% share of web browsing in the United States.

Country iPhone Browsing Share December 30-31
United States .27%
United Kingdom .11%
France .10%

Another interesting aspect of this data is that these numbers do not include visitors using Windows on Mac hardware via Boot Camp or other program.  Therefore, these numbers actually understate the market share for the Mac.  We have no way of telling by how much, however.

AT&T used to be bad, but when they took over Cingular, they took over it’s service, and it was good.

I had AT&T toward the middle to late 90s, and the service was so bad I could seldom make a call with the phone they wouldn’t admit was bad. I finally left and went to Cingular.

Since that time I’ve had no trouble at all. Now that AT&T bought Cingular, the service is still good, and on a recent trip from California to Vermont, the service worked excellent at all points where I could make calls between flights.

The television service worked well in Burlington.

I really like the service I’m getting now.

Went to your two links posted at the end, and both returned a page saying the pages are not available. I suppose the data was gained through either web scraping or by individual counter data? This seems an interesting way to predict stock price direction after major tech releases. Yeah, running dog here.

I would tend to agree. As a former roving cellular field engineer, I can tell that since AT&T took over Cingular here in SE Tennessee, they've obviously gone through and optimized the system to some degree. I noticed a significant change in service (signal level, audio quality, etc) in 3 of the local cells I use daily about a month after the take over. This sort of optimization is something that is normally done shortly after system construction, and then on about a quarterly basis for those companies who realize what it is they are selling. Cingular never bothered to do that in this area, or even routine maintenence to some extent, and it showed. This optimization usually includes optimizing the antenna orientation, adjusting power levels, adjusting hand off thresholds, audio levels, preamps, etc.

In my area the service is noticeably better since AT&T took over. Surely it's the same local engineers, but with more proactive management.

I switched from Verizon when I got my iPhone. My AT&T service has been as good, or better, than Verizon.

It’s interesting what different choices corporate leaders make. Cingular seems to have given your area less priority than AT&T now does. I’m glad it changed for the better, for you.

The Southland of California seemed to be a pretty sound area as far as Cingular service was concerned. Now you area seems to have been brought up to par as well. Good deal.

The Southland of California seemed to be a pretty sound area as far as Cingular service was concerned.

Probably has a lot to do with how sophisticated the area manager(s) thing the subscriber base is.

I started working in the engineering side of the cellular biz in 1987, first for a major carrier, then on my own as a contractor to both cellular equipment manufacturers and carriers. I've commissioned a little over 7,000 cell sites in 49 states and 16 countries. I've done a bunch of work for a lot of different cell carriers all over until I sold my business in 2002. Over that time I've seen a lot of different marketing strategies, primarily poor ones.

Mostly, what I've seen in terms of marketing strategies is not putting out the best, most reliable signal, but rather spending an unbalanced amount of money on store fronts to sell phones and commission gimmicks to their sales people. Most marketing managers and market managers for cell companies I've encountered, including ones for Western Wireless, Cellular One, Bell and all their various subsidiaries, and most other major cellular and PCS carriers in the USA, are oblivious to what they are really selling, i.e., reliable service, until the system goes down, of course......

I think it depends on where you are. I switched from Cingular to Verizon due to all the dropped calls and “no service” in places I went frequently. And the service at the stores was atrocious. I’ve been very happy with Verizon.

I’m sure you’re right and I’m glad to hear Verizon is working out well for you.
