More than a year after gaining federal recognition, the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area has been awarded $150,000 in aid from Washington.

The heritage area ties together New Jersey's Revolutionary War sites and landscapes as well as the state and national parks that highlight the pivotal role New Jersey played in the Revolution.

Reps. Rush Holt (D-12th Dist.) and Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11th Dist.) have been instrumental is pushing for the funding.

"Despite featuring over 290 military engagements and serving as a buffer between the rebel stronghold of Philadelphia and the British stronghold of New York, New Jersey's role in the American Revolution is often overlooked," Holt said. "This overdue infusion of federal dollars will help develop the Crossroads as a national heritage area."

The Crossroads Heritage Area is one of 37 federally designated heritage areas nationwide. It includes all or sections of Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties.

Frelinghuysen is my congress critter and I have always liked him.

You can drive from Trenton to Princeton to New Brunswick to Morristown and see just a few markers. And, if the General's winter quarters were not in Morristown over two winters, there would be fewer still!

Hope this money gets to the Steuben House in Hackensack before the mold destroys the remainder of the antiques there.

That would be a great use for the money, but I bet not. Steuben House will likely have to raise it on their own...

Quite a few patriots are buried at old Rahway Cemetery along St. Georges Avenue. Tunnels to a nearby creeks, used for smuggling arms and such, are known to exist. I have personally seen the tunnels.

Google on Rahway Cemetery for directions and more information. They even have a marker for a girl falsely accused of being a witch in the 1700’s. Epitaph: “She lived in love and died a witch.”

The federal funding is a far cry from the $10 million the 14-county heritage area was promised over 10 years, but staffers say they're happy.

It's a big drop from $10 million. Hope it helps.
