John Edwards Claims He 'Calmed' Pakistan; NBC's Gregory Unfazed
newsbusters ^ | Jan 3, 2008 | Rich Noyes

On this morning’s Today show, NBC’s David Gregory challenged Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards about his vote for the Iraq war, his relative lack of experience, and his divisive us-vs-them rhetoric. But Gregory had absolutely no reaction when Edwards grandly claimed that his phone call to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in the hours after the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto “was a calming influence” that helped stabilize an “international crisis” and was proof he is “ready for the Presidency.”

“We just had this, this international crisis in Pakistan that is still ongoing. And my response to that was to speak directly to President Musharraf, to urge him to do a series of things that would move the country toward democracy, that would allow international inspectors into the country and to proceed with the elections in an open, fair, verifiable and secure way. And I believe was a calming influence in a very volatile situation.”

Does Edwards really think that in the turmoil following Bhutto’s killing his phone call was of any consequence whatsoever? Or is this just another display of Edwards’ knack for grotesque overstatement, as when in 2004 he claimed that “when John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going to walk, get up out of that wheelchair and walk again.”

I can just picture that coversation:

EDWARDS: President Musharrif?
MUSHARIFF: Yeah?
EDWARDS: This is John Edwards.
MUSHARIFF: Who?
EDWARDS: John Edwards.
MUSHARIFF: I don’t know any John Edwards. What do you want and how did you get my number?
EDWARDS: I’m John Edwards and I’m running for US President.
MUSHARIFF: Never heard of you.
EDWARDS: Well I think you should do stuff for like democracy and stuff.
MUSHARIFF: Uh... Thanks. Don’t call me again.

just another display of Edwards’ knack for grotesque overstatement

This guy acts like John Edwards is his screenname and he talks like an anonymous internet poster. He must really live in that other America.

Why would Musharraf want or need the opinion of a private citizen of another country?

Edwards is a slip and fall lawyer, he was just drumming up business.

John Edwards is, after all, a trial lawyer. He made a lot of money selling junk science to juries and receiving huge fees for the settlements the juries awarded. Based on his past performance, and his occupation, it is unlikely that he will change his methods.

And the people who support him think that he is the most "authentic" candidate, at least compared to the other Democrats.

Isn’t this just the kind of thing Ambulance Chasers do? Scan the papers for someone having a tough time, then slip in a phone call or personal visit at the hospital/funeral home, maybe drop off your business card? Edwards is just reverting to type. Can you imagine having an Ambulance Chaser as POTUS? Cripes, the Bombs would be falling and Edwards would be sifting through the rubble, looking for victims he could file lawsuits on behalf of.

There is a larger question: Whyever did Musharraf take Edwards' call?

In fact, I doubt that he did -- Edwards probably spoke with his Deputy Assistant for Dealing With Pretentious Politicians.

He probably channelled Bhutto and told Musharraf where the keys to the safe deposit box were.

Oh wait, wrong John Edward.

Never mind.
