Romney ego trips and falls flat in Iowa
Boston Herald ^ | 1/4/08 | Howie Carr

For Mitt Romney, it may be one and done. Last night he looked like an overrated second seed out of the Big Ten who gets upset in the first round by Campbell College.

As for Hillary, as my listener Ron from Norwood put it, she’ll be the one taking hostages at her headquarters in New Hampshire today.

Mitt not only got his teeth knocked out by Mike Huckabee, but the Huckster and his new plug, ugly Ed Rollins, mussed up his hair pretty good, too. Unless something happens this weekend - and debates have not been Mitt’s strong suit this year - he could be going down in the record books as the John Connolly, the Phil Gramm, the Steve Forbes of the 2008 race.

The guy who blew millions on an ego trip off a political cliff.

See you in New Hampshire, Mitt said last night. Yeah, at Lake Winnipesaukee, on Fourth of July weekend. Is it safe to say, Mitt, that Huckabee brainwashed the GOP voters of Iowa?

Maybe Mitt should have run for re-election as governor after all.

Instead, he had a press availability scheduled in New Hampshire this morning at 2 a.m. That must have been some wakeup call, not to mention a wake. Mitt can spin it all he likes that the Huckster had a natural base in Iowa, but that’s what money is supposed to overcome. That’s why they call it the mother’s milk of politics.

And Romney’s money and ego is what will keep him in the race until the bitter end, limping past the finish line.

Is the (abridged)statement: “She(HITLERY)’s buying ad time on my show and Rush.” TRUE?!?!

Talk about the definition of desperation!

Lame comment on the CLusterhuck.

Romney did well, at 25%, but Christian identity politics did better ...

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1948098/posts?page=15#15

“They’re informed on abortion and gay marriage; they consider everything else kind of secondary until you explain just what a nanny-stater Huckabee is, and they still stay with him, usually. They support him because he’s strongly pro-life, and because he’s an evangelical like them. It really is identity politics like Rush says; they identify with him and don’t care that he’s basically a pro-life John Edwards.”

It is for Romney.
This all but ensures he loses in New Hampshire to John McCain, too. Then the race moves on to the rest of the country where Romney hasn’t campaigned and has little support. His plan of bootstrapping his momentum with Iowa and New Hampshire failed, and starting next week Romney will be walking around with a big ‘loser’ sign over his head. All he can do now if go broke spending his own money in the remaining 48 states the way he did in Iowa and New Hampshire — to about the same effect.

Carr says “it looks like it comes down to Obama vs. McCain in the finals.” I don’t buy the McCain part. Mainstream Republicans don’t like him. They don’t like his views on immigration. They don’t like his vote against the Bush tax cuts. They don’t like McCain-Feingold. I really don’t see McCain winning over the hearts and minds of the GOP at this late stage in his career.

As for who will be the GOP nominee, I haven’t a clue.

It’s absolutely true. Hildabeast ads are on both WTTK and WRKO talk ... conservative entertainment.

Romney has been bombarding the airwaves with TV and radio ads in many primary states off and on for over a year now .

He is still well positioned and will not go easily .

but Christian identity politics did better ...

The percentage of those who identify themselves as Christian-identity evangelicals voting in Iowa are double the percentage of the national average.

Neither can I. I can’t believe the Huckabee has done so well. Granted, Free Republic is a rock-hard CONSERVATIVE community for the most part, but I did think we were pretty representative of the Republican Party as a whole as well.

I don’t like Huckabee, haven’t from the beginning, and despite everything I have read — and I have read a lot — I see no reason to change my view now.

I like Mitt slightly better than Huckabee, but both of them are a huge drop from Fred and Duncan.

McCain is totally off my radar. He’s just too frigging crazy.

Talk about mixed emotions. Fred comes in 3rd, bad news. Hillary comes in 3rd, good news.

It’s Friday night, after 1800, I need to consult John Barley-corn.

I'm willing to believe that in this election cycle, neither of the top two from Iowa will go on to win. Romney has way too many problems with his record and socialist policies. Huckabee is a house built on sand and his support was already waning, he simply "beat the clock" in Iowa.

That being said, Romney could still be a viable threat, but if $80 Million can't buy you a win in Iowa and you get beat out by the "K-Mart Kandidate", there's not a lot of encouragement to continue into more hostile, expensive territory.

Then again, I'm biased. I think Fred still has a chance for the reasons above.

McCain is very plausible.
You’ve got it all wrong. McCain is very popular with Mainstream Republicans and Mainstream Voters in general. He’s the most popular politician in America.

A one-two punch in Iowa and New Hampshire will take Romney out as a serious contender. Meanwhile the MSM will ensure Fred remains grounded by scrapping the traditional top 3 Golden Ticket rule for Iowa and treat McCain like he was the runner-up instead.
Huckabee’s 15 minutes will be over, and Giuliani will have missed the boat completely, because by then McCain will have all the buzz that was supposed to be Giuliani’s, and for the same reasons: front-runner, electable, American hero, strong on national security, thereby eliminating the rationale for Giuliani.

The accelerated calendar and front-loading of the primaries will mean that no candidate will drop out until after Tsunami-Tuesday, and even then Romney’s ego and pride will keep him in the race until the bitter end, wanting to make sure he gets his money’s worth. This will mean that between the fragmented and crowded field, no one candidate will be able to rise up enough to derail McCain.

That’s one scenario.
The other one is much, much worse. It’s essentially the same as the first, except in this scenario Huckabee never fizzles, and he takes McCain’s place in the equation, buoyed by a united evangelical front that dominates the divided and quibbling Movement Conservatives.

Is “Christian identity” the new code world for anti-Mormon?

Not necessarily.

To me, Christian identity describes those who would vote for a man who promotes himself based on his Christian credentials.

Yes, the GOP must remain respectful and supportive of practicing Christians, but we must NOT morph into a Christian identity party.

That is one step too close to embracing that church and state thing.

From the editorial:

For months now, the Barack Obama rallies have had the same feel as Deval Patrick’s last year - thousands of overweight Baby Boomer moonbats on prescription medication, the men in gray ponytails, the women knitting in their tent dresses, all of them in full swoon. How did Joe Biden describe Obama as a “clean” black man? The Boomers vote Obama, they feel good about themselves, their lives haven’t been a total selfish waste.

Howie's spot on.

I see you noticed this too.

Hillary placed 3rd - but her campaign is "still alive."

Fred placed 3rd - so the MSM talks about McCain.

Pathetic.
