I agree with the others that Shrum is not so subtly inquiring about a vacant position. But in this he is absolutely correct:

Instead of 1992, when Bill was the personification of change, their model was 1996. So Hillary ran as a pseudo-incumbent, with a selection of bite-size proposals and an abundance of caution and transparent calculation.

There are advantages to being even a pseudo-incumbent, not the least of which are name recognition and an established relationship with the press. I think that at least part of the reason that Hillary has chosen to run this way instead of as a major agent of change is that most of the changes for which she is known have already been focus-grouped and scare the heck out of people. HillaryCare? Redirection of defense spending into social programs? More emphasis on the UN? Gun control? Either she lies about her intentions (already tried it) or changes them (fat chance). Or she simply attempts to deflect attention toward electability and inevitability.

If she had the lockstep cooperation of major media as BJ Billy did, this might still be a winning proposition. But it ain't only Billy who's two-timing Hilly - Obama is the MSM's new darling. That has to sting a little.

"Hillary Clinton is a real person, often funny in private, with
engaging qualities that have been well-hidden in this campaign."

Isn't that what they said about Al Gore?

Turns out he only talked funny and
had funny ideas about the weather.

More fundamentally, Hillary seems to be making an argument about herself, not the future or the voters.

Nailed it.

Motivating Heinlien quote; thanks. What is the translation of the Spartan motto?

OK, I've watched this throughout the day.

Her emotions were real, though misdirected. She's genuinely distraught, though not for the country. She's grieving her defeat, not the country's.

Major Garret of Fox reported earlier that when she arrived at that coffee shop, many were offered Hillary! signs, but few wanted them. He also said there were not many at her stop at the coffee shop.

I think she crafted her words to deliver a contrived message rather than expressing what she was really feeling - a sense of defeat.

The next report Garret did featured Hillary! back on message.

Shrum, senior strategist in the 2000 Al Gore and 2004 John Kerry presidential campaigns

If the subject is losing, Shrum knows what the hell he's talking about.

Ann, I thought his nickname was Bob "Oh For Eight" Shrum! With a record like that, you'd think he would have been kicked to the curb after three strikes.

Bob Shrum is like one of those DON'T graphics on home assembled furniture that's surrounded by an international 'NO' symbol.

Take his advice and do exactly the opposite.

Yikes, she just did the "cackle" when Major asked her about her emotional response!

She clearly was embarrassed by her reaction this morning!

More confirmation that her emotions were clearly reigning this a.m.

She's grieving her defeat, not the country's.

She's grieving for all those wasted 35 years of taking crap/living with BJ and not getting the intended, DESERVED prize.

“COME AND TAKE THEM!!!!”

the defiant response of King Leonidas I of Sparta to Xerxes I of Persia at the onset of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC). Xerxes, whose forces vastly outnumbered the Spartans and their allies, offered to spare the lives of Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors (see the movie, “The 300”) if they would only surrender their weapons. Xerxes men numbered, supposedly in the hundreds of thousands....

Instead, the Spartans held Thermopylae for three days and, although they were ultimately annihilated, they inflicted serious damage upon the Persian army, and most importantly delayed its progress to Athens, essentially preventing the conquest of the Greek Peninsula.
