Canada Goosed [Steyn being silenced in Canada]

Canada goosed

By Pete Vere January 9, 2008

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ontario

An attempt to have a Canadian panel stifle Mark Steyn poses a threat to American freedom of speech, the conservative columnist says.

The Canadian author told The Washington Times in a telephone interview that the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) agreeing to investigate a Muslim complaint against him opens a new front on threats to Canadians' press and religious freedom: speech that originates in the United States.

"There are attempts to circumscribe the First Amendment, and certain groups have become very adept at using legal and quasi-legal methods to restrict discussion and what's discussed," said Mr. Steyn, who spends half the year living in New Hampshire and writes for several U.S.-based publications.

Under Canadian law, the CHRC investigates purported incidents of hate speech and discrimination and refers some to the quasi-judicial Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, which can impose fines or issue restraint orders.

Mr. Steyn became subject to a CHRC investigation last month when the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC) complained about an excerpt Mr. Steyn had reprinted from "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It," Mr. Steyn's best-seller published by U.S.-based Regnery Publishing.

I think it would be interesting if Syeyn would request asylum, thus allowing him to remain here all year long. That would be VERY embarrassing to Canada if they proceeded with any action against Steyn.

Does not surprise me one iota. I used to live in vancouver...the san francisco of canada. Canadians, in general, are sheep to the liberalism. And they ALWays blame Americans for their troubles.

So if those commies up north want to pursue this, the more Mark Steyn will be canonized.

Can you post a larger version of that picture? I’m having trouble seeing it.

We can be certain that if a certain party regains power in the '08 election- these same tactics will be used here, to silence anyone who doesn't give blind allegiance to the far left.

I don't know how Mark Steyn puts up with this BS. In either case, we live in scary times- lots of bad omens looming.

Well, how?

I can see various image specs in “View page source” ... did you enter them manually? ... and whats with alt=”Turkey Shoot” ?

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Not to mention Canada.

Here's how I did it; looked at "View Source" for the pic, and cut it down to a manageable size; yours is 2000 by 3008:

I added the "Turkey Shoot" as that's what they think they're doing to Steyn.     ;^)

Maybe Steyn and Michael Savage should start a anti-jihadi lawsuit fund or something. Something tells me these kinds of lawsuits are going to keep coming. It’s the foreign Muslims way of changing the legal systems of Western countries more to their liking.

That’s a great idea, it really is. Of course he would probably get more rights if he just came over here illegally and lived in the shadows.
