The Chinese People's Liberation Army and Space Warfare

Space warfare will be an integrated part of battle planning by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in any future conflict. One of the major proponents of integrated space power for the PLA, Major General Cai Fengzhen, believes that "control of portions of outer space is a natural extension of other forms of territorial control," such as sea or air control.[1] More seriously, because of American superiority in space, China's military theorists treat the United States as the most likely opponent in that domain of war. The head of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, Lieutenant General Kevin Campbell, thinks it is possible that "within three years we can be challenged at a near-peer level" by China.[2] This means that China will be capable of "taking out a number of communications capabilities over a theater of war."[3]

The Genesis of China's Space Warfare Doctrine

We should not be surprised that the Chinese military is developing doctrine for warfare in space. Military theory evolves in response to changes in technology. It is a normal activity for strategists and war planners in any military to consider how advances in weapons and technology affect warfare and to explore how to adapt to these changes. The moves by the PLA are serious and bear watching, but American security policymakers should avoid an alarmist reaction to what is happening in China's military.

The PLA's development of space warfare doctrine is not some self-made phenomenon. Rather, the PLA has carefully absorbed and is reacting to what the U.S. military has published on space warfare and counter-space operations.[4] The PLA has also studied Soviet-era and contemporary Russian thinking on space operations, using these studies to guide its own evolving doctrine.[5]

If ever there was a society born and bred for communism it is the Chinese. They could make it work. Scary.

Thank you, President Clinton, for de-classifying missile guidance technology so that Loral could sell it to the Chinese!

I would be doing everything in my power to foul up, screw up, blow up each and every single effort by the PLA. A front group in the U.S.? Get them together, have a party, have a fire say I. Agents coming to the U.S.? Make sure they never arrive, or that their stay is most short.

Compromise every last Chinese academic studying these topics.

Track down any and all facilities involved in their space program and destroy them. Find their suppliers, destroy them too.

Make life utterly miserable for the PLA members trying to get into this area. Don’t just let them sit there and “study” us. Puh leeeze.

The government of China forces any Chinese taking a visit to another country to enage in spy activity collecting any valuable information useful to support military and political instruments. If you want them not to arrive, we will have to deny all Chinese arriving from China, and even consider Chinese-Americans to pack up and go back home. The hurdle is very high. Guess what, the Department of State recently eased the VISA requirements for visitors from China, making more spy activitiy easy. Blame the lobbyists that were bribed from China. Also guess what, China also has hired lobbyist experts in US to put pressure on the government not to take a tough stance responding to exports from China after food scandals. Our country also needs to block all possibilities of China engaging in lobby activity, making it illegal for China to pay lobby groups for their objectives, indirectly hijacking our congress.

I’ll make a good guess where the pressure by China on congress members are coming from: US firms doing bussiness with China blackmailed (warning their factories will be put out of bussiness in China, or exports will be denied from US) and bribed by Chicom, acting as a lobby group. We need to get US firms out of China, and move them to India.

It does not take a genius to figure out that land and sea operations are increasingly dependant on space-based technologies. Being able to compromise critical capabilites over a theater of operations, even momentarily, could provide tactical and even strategic advantages. I have no doubt the Chinese will work toward such a goal.

However, the one candidate who recognizes the threat is getting shoved off the podium.

"I told you so.", will be bitter words indeed.

Dean Ing, a super writer - posits a war with China where they use a rail gun to wreak our GPS constellation prior to the start of hostilities.

It does point up the absolute dependence the US Military has on the GPS system. A cracking good tale, made even more frighting by the very real possibility that - it could be real. Think - 'Hunt for Red October' before the Evil Empire fell apart.
