Human Events endorses Fred Thompson

We begin by recalling the profound words of Ronald Reagan at the Conservative Political Action Conference Feb. 15, 1975: “A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers.” We believed that then, and we believe it now. The issue for us -- and for the conservative community -- boils down to which of the candidates is most representative of the fundamental conservative principles we believe in. The answer is Fred Thompson.

I have noticed that too. For the too late crowd.

Iowa: Huckabee

NH: McCain

Michigan: Romney leading

SC: undecided.

Fred has not been lazy or too late, he wants to peak at the right time. If anyone is actually undecided about Fred and not just operatives supporting other candidates please consider the preceding chart.

You are missing my point.

He set his sights ON ONE PERSON. Ok, we get the point, Huckabee = bad, but what are you (Thompson) offering, and why aren’t the others better?

Even a Thompson supporter must admit that he has been less than enthusiastic in the past few weeks. Hell, MCCAIN has shown more energy.

This is my entire point, Thompson should have spread the criticism, and told everyone why he is better than ALL the others. Instead, he wasted time on one man (Huckabee), when his problem was differentiating himself from the WHOLE FIELD. He failed to do this, and now instead of bringing himself up, he brought Huckabee down (although I would dispute this), and now McCain can thank Thompson for his help.

Fred helped himself last night, but I’m afraid Huck and Fred are going to take enough real conservative and liberal Christian votes so as to give our state to McCain with a plurality.

I've thought the same thing and last night saw Thompson begin his demolition of Huckabee.

I hope that what I'm hearing and seeing that Thompson could be McCain's hatchet man to allow McCain in is not true but it makes one wonder.

Unless HUCK is a Mc Cain troll to divide christian conservatives

Or it could be that Thompson, who is a close friend and supporter of McCain (Feingold), is the troll.

Huck is Jimmy Carter in republican clothing: well intentioned, but dumb as a stump

Dude, settle down.

To compare Huckabee to Carter is a major insult and one that is ridiculous seeing that Huckabee is a sharp-witted, articulate speaker who is in a class by himself among the GOP hopefuls.

I'm not saying that he is better than they are but he is certainly better than Carter.

Well I have heard that Huck is McCains man to take away votes from Fred and split the Conservatives and the evangelicals. Who knows.

Whats probably closer to the truth is that Huckabee's rise has taken votes that would have gone to Fred. Fred is getting most of the social endorsements so his closest competitor is Huck. McCain is relying on electability and his service in the Navy. Those supporters know what McCain is. Huckabee has a record to exploit and uncover and until now most voters do not know that.

Is this the big endorsement?

Its a good endorsement but not worthy of all of yesterday's hoopla, that, and the fact that the BIG endorsement is not supposed to happen until noon today, makes me think this is clearly NOT the one referred to yesterday.

F&F also had some fool (I came in after they had introduced him) saying that Romney was the best last night because he was the only one who had the courage to attack McPain.

I personally saw it as a tie between Romney, Thompson and Huckabee.

McCain was ridiculous, claiming that he is some sort of Superman (Why didn't anyone ask him about his opposition to Bush's tax cuts or McCain/Feingold?), Guiliani was a long-winded blowhard, and Paul, while giving some very good answers, seemed to be so "blame America" it was pathetic.

Thompson and Huckabee are competing for primarily the same voters in the primaries (the southern, social conservative). McCain appeals for the more independent and moderate, strong national defense voters.

If Thompson contrasts himself with Huckabee for those voters, THEN he can begin to compete with McCain for his voters as the sane alternative to McCain.

This really hurt my mental image of him.

I'm not saying that it "made him look big" but it convinced some people that Fred is in this to win! It showed some "undecideds" that Huckabee definitely isn't a conservative - at least enough to do more research to find out Huck's record rather than just trusting what Huck has said about himself or what the local (typical leftist MSM) newspaper has been pushing.

The folks I talked to, prior to last night, just thought Fred was a nice guy but not passionate about wanting to be POTUS.

I'm truly sorry that your "mental image" of Fred is now tarnished. This isn't touch football - it's a full contact sport.

The "right time" may have already past.

Fred, while more animated last night, still comes across as an old codger and looks horrible.

Worse than McCain?

Who are you supporting Mitt or Huck?

Huck on Morning Joe...said Fred forgot to take his Metamucil.

That was puerile.

However, he seems to be off of the radar screen for the news media and for the voters.

So, are you gonna vote for him or will you let some others influence your decision?

In a State with lets just say, “economic issues”, do you think that the “Southern, Social Conservative” (only) route is the sure winner?

This really hurt my mental image of him.

So, are you gonna complain or tell us which candidate is a better conservative? Here's a hint - there isn't one. Here's another hint - Fred is the best we've got so go out and support him and quit bashing.

I don't understand why people don't just support the candidate that fits their beliefs.

Because they want to be with the winner. In Atlanta we call them "fair weather fans". These are the people that buy the Super Bowl Champion team jersey after they have won it.

Fred needs to go out with his wife and kids more often. Doesn't look like an "old codger" then.

One point, though--being in the White House ages people very fast, I'd hate that to happen to someone with little children like Mr. Thompson.
