Ayatollah Khamenei (right) said the US should not try "to break Iran"

Tehran has warned the United States not to try and use the dispute over the Iranian nuclear programme to bring Iran to its knees.

The warning came from the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a meeting with the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei.

Ayatollah Khamenei insisted that Iran was not building a nuclear bomb.

He also said that the issue should not even be considered by the United Nations Security Council.

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian military official accused the Americans of being warmongers, following the incident in which Washington claimed that Iranian patrol boats swarmed around their warships in the Gulf.

The official said the incident did show Iran's determination to defend the Straits of Hormuz - the strategic waterway at the mouth of the Gulf.

So, whatever really happened in that naval confrontation, the verbal skirmishing continues as fierce as ever.

Gordon Brown threatened Iran with an international ban on oil and gas investment last night as he mapped out the "hard-headed internationalism" that will guide his foreign policy.

We’re going to be dealing with a Nuclear Iran due to our stonewalling on this issue. It’s time to put it’s leaders out of our misery.

It rather sounds like the Iranians believe that they own the Straits. Their neighbours are likely to disagree.

I thought they said the US made the incident up. The Iranian government needs a Ministry of Lie Coordination.

Ayatollah Khamenei insisted that Iran was not building a nuclear bomb.

Ayatollah Khamenei will be the first to insist that Iran has a nuclear bomb once they achieve the capability to do so and have one.

Nothing. I have not seen his head on TV since the election. It's weird...he puts his deputy (Julia Gillard) out front, and all she talks about is internal stuff.

Strange for a former diplomat to make himself so scarce...but one thing I have noticed, our 'news' reports from around the world are much more balanced without the obvious disgusting Leftwing bias.

What's behind that? I have no idea...could our new Prime Minister be a closet conservative? Nah. He's firmly in the middle IMO - reminds me of Blair.

Recent report states money has been allocated for School Security. Nearly fell off my chair when the government spokesperson said 'for schools that obviously have security needs...particularly JEWISH SCHOOLS.'

Methinks there's a message in there somewhere...

At first glance the headline left me with the impression that the BBC itself issued a stern warning to America.

.

.

.

OTOH perhaps that actually is the case after all - the BBC warning America. LOL.

Their verbiage sounds as though they believe that the whole of the Straits belong to them. It is that kind of attitude that makes others in the area nervous.

Bush warns them, they warn us...

They are trying to create the same tit-for-tat BS that we see with the Palestinians and the Israelis...

I'm sure el Baradei just nodded and agreed. Not that el Baradei is unfit for the position or anything. :') Thanks Ernest.
