Scott Kleeb on Friday urged Douglas County Democrats to help create “a new brand of politics” that constructs a platform for change.
“We need to build a new majority that will bring people together, bridge old divides and forge a way forward for everyone,” Kleeb told the county party’s annual Truman Dinner.
Kleeb’s featured appearance before Omaha Democrats helped set the stage for a decision on whether he’ll seek his party’s 2008 Senate nomination.
“For too long, we as a country have talked about rights without talking about duties,” Kleeb said in prepared remarks.
“For too long as a country, we’ve talked about benefits without talking about burdens.
“For too long, we as a country have not talked about obligations and sacrifice.”
The results, he said, include skyrocketing debt, growing federal budget deficits, rising trade imbalances and falling wages.
“We face the moral test of our lifetime in combating climate change and achieving true energy independence, not just from our enemies in the world, but from ourselves and our consuming habits,” he said.
Kleeb, the 2006 Democratic congressional nominee in western and central Nebraska’s 3rd District, is one of his party’s two potential Senate candidates this year.
Columbus industrialist Tony Raimondo recently changed his party registration from Republican to Democratic, taking the first step in preparing for a possible Senate bid.
Kleeb, who teaches history at Hastings College, lost to Republican Rep. Adrian Smith in last year’s 3rd District House race.
“We face a global threat of extremism and division, and we face it alone with a damaged reputation in the world,” he said.
Domestic policies “starve our schools in the name of efficiency rather than efficacy,” he said, and “tell us we can drill our way to energy independence and then bury our heads in those wells when it comes to global warming.”
The nation faces a series of daunting challenges, he said.
“But nothing worth doing ever is easy,” Kleeb said.
Kleeb seems like a good campaigner. In the general election, he may win as much as 45% of the vote.
With Scott Kleeb running for the Dhimmicrats, they will be able to corner the Advocate vote.
That sounds like nothing but psychobabble. If he gets to 40%, I’ll be surprised.

Of course, for moderate rodents, they don’t have anyone of similar mindset running for President. When was the last time a non-liberal rodent contested a Presidential primary ?

I’m thinking 1976 (George Wallace was a demagogue, but no liberal. Jimmy Carter gave the apprearance of being non-liberal). Perhaps 1984, when Foghorn Leghorn (Fritz Hollings) ran, could be the last time.

I just laugh whenever anyone talks about uniting, ‘bridging old divides’, etc, etc.
It appeals to moderates who may decide to melt and politically sing ‘kumbaya’ with em’, they hold these few up as examples of how everyone’s ‘united’, and the vast majority of the rest of us who don’t buy this crap become ‘the haters’, those against progress, those who want to divide and break us, etc etc. Total Alinsky method here.
I don’t want to be fake united with people who are so totally opposite me. The only way I want to be united with them is if they become conservative and we actually believe the same things on most important issues.
Yeah, he teaches social studies, errrrrrr, history at Hastings College. Scratch one more campus off the list. Looks like the girls are going out of state - hopefully to Univ. of Northern Colorado - where they allow students who have a CHL to use it - on campus.
