Three Asian men who were convicted of attacking a group of friends and trying to kill one of them have each been given an 18-year jail sentence. Sodrul Islam, 23, Delwar Hussain, 21, Mamoon Hussain, 20, were sentenced at the Old Bailey.
John Payne, 33, was left partially paralysed by the attack on an east London estate nearly two years ago.
The court heard that as many as 30 men attacked the group of five white people, shouting racial abuse.
Police said the attack was unprovoked; Mr Payne had been on a night out with four friends when they were attacked.
He is thought to have been struck by a machete or axe before falling to the ground.
Mr Payne was repeatedly kicked, causing bone fragments to enter his brain. He now suffers from epilepsy as a result of the attack.

Great PC reporting by the BBC. It goes out of its way not to identify these thugs as “Muslims” by calling them Asians, but fails to identify their country of origin that would qualify them as Asian...I can only presume Pakistan.

Nothing to do with PC and not a synonym for Muslim. Simply a common usage in the UK as a description of someone of Pakistani, Indian or Bangladeshi (mainly) descent.
For the simple reason that these were all part of the British empire and hence the earliest origin location for immigration from the continent of Asia into the UK. Thus, in a great number of areas, people’s first experience of a person from Asia would have been someone from one of these countries.
The usage predates any notion of Political Correctness being heard of in the UK.
I believe that the description ‘asian’ is also used in the US, but would be applied to a person of Korean descent, but not to a person of Indian descent? For, presumably, the same reasons that the opposite tends to be true in the UK.

In the U.S. Koreans would be called Asians because they come from the Asian contintent and Indians would not because they come from the Indian continent. But most press reports here wouldn’t use either they would identify the nation of origin. They would however do their best to avoid mentioning any connection to Islam like the British press.
Err, India and Korea are both in Asia. Which was my point. There is no ‘Indian continent’.

It’s a report of a court case. In my experience, the religious affiliation of the victims or defendants does not often come up in a court case, unless directly relevant to the case. Perhaps it is different in US courts.
One can of course make an assumption as to the likely religious affiliation of these defendants from the names given, as you appear to have done. To be honest, I’m happy for the media to give me facts and let me make assumptions for myself, rather than them making assumptions for me. Your mileage may vary.
Most Indians, however, don't consider themselves Asian, they consider themselves Indian. India is considered a sub-continent. I don't really know what a sub-continent means, except "we're not Asian."
FR always gets confused by British usage in which Pakistan is seen as an Asian country - we see it as an Arab state which properly belongs to the Middle East. Thus when an article like this appears, readers who aren't familiar with UK media assume an attempt is being made to obfuscate the Arab Muslim heritage of the criminals...since that's exactly what the American media would do. ;)

Our press reports do tend stray from a strict word-for-word reading of court transcripts and add some information not found there.

Really? How many continents do US school geography lessons teach? When I read online sources such as Wikipedia or About.com (which I’d assume to be US-centric), they just talk about seven continents - Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australasia and Antarctica, as I was taught at school. I assumed that was reasonably universal.

We were taught that India is a sub-continent of Asia and that Indians are Indians not Asian. The Indian sub-continent is a seperate tectonic plate from the Asian plate.
Being 52 and long out of the school system I don’t know if they rely on Wikipedia or About.com as references in geology or ethno-anthropology classes.
