NEW YORK - At least 121 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans have committed a killing or been charged in one in the United States after returning from combat, The New York Times reported Sunday.
The newspaper said it also logged 349 homicides involving all active-duty military personnel and new veterans in the six years since military action began in Afghanistan, and later Iraq. That represents an 89-percent increase over the previous six-year period, the newspaper said.
About three-quarters of those homicides involved Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, the newspaper said. The report did not illuminate the exact relationship between those cases and the 121 killings also mentioned in the report.
The newspaper said its research involved searching local news reports, examining police, court and military records and interviewing defendants, their lawyers and families, victims' families and military and law enforcement officials.
Defense Department representatives did not immediately respond to a telephone message early Sunday. The Times said the military agency declined to comment, saying it could not reproduce the paper's research.

Wait till they report on the criminal activity of illegal aliens.. but don’t hold your breath...
Well, there have been something like 16,500 homicides per year committed in the United States since 2001, and more than 90 percent of those homicides were committed by individuals who attended public schools. The U.S. Department of Education has declined to comment.
Also similar;y interesting trend....
The high numbers of these young warriors have died in accidents (vehicles, motorcycles, off-roading, or just jack-@ssing around) after they returned home and were discharged...
Because they survived the war zone and thus have some sense of invulnerability...
( My number wasn't up in the war zone... must not be up now... WATCH THIS!!)
“One of the most poorly writing, misleading stories I have read. Pretty pathetic reporting even by the New York Times pathetically low standards of Journalism. Pretty obvious they had a story line and simply cut and paste the facts to fit their preconcinced notions.”
Can you set it straight or link to an article?
It’s the NY Slimes so I’m sure they’re fudging, but I’d like to know what because I know I’m going to hear about this from my latte swilling liberal relatives.
I don't know how many murders were committed by crimaliens, but hardly a day goes by that I don't read of at least two murders having been committed by border jumpers. If that estimate is correct, there would be 730 murders per year by the estimated 12 million crimaliens making their murder rate 60.83 per million--but since all veterans are adults and 60% of the crimaliens are minors, the comparable rate for crimaliens would be 152.1 per million.
We need to do two things: 1. Close down New Fallujah, a/k/a Detroit and 2. Close the border.
This is just more Sunday morning junk reporting. The Sunday paper has the largest circulation in the week so they figure they can reach more people with this enemy propaganda.
You’re speaking logic, the Slimes are speaking propaganda.
Its a Sunday weeper piece. NYT does em best.
This is what is troubling me. If the relationship between the cases and the killings is not specified, it indicates the newspaper is drawing it's own conclusions about the data. Considering the number of times the NY Slimes has been caught fudging or misleading or out right lying about the War, I do not trust their conclusions.
Perhaps I am the one being biased here but given their record, find it really hard to trust anything the Time says until verified by reputable sources.
It seems there is less murder in war than in say Washington DC or any gun control city.
I’m willing to bet that about 97% of murders in New Orleans were committed by democrats. Is the NYT going to cover that story?
SHEEESH..WHAT DO YOU THINK
How many were self defense and how many were actually convicted?
Let’s examine this “statistic”.
This is why I love reading FR forums. Simple math (that the media won’t run against it) shows just what a rag the NYT really is. What do you suppose would be the public reaction if they ran the numbers on minorities or illegals? Note that the original article comared nothing to it, just blatently posted a fact with obvious intent. They apparently went though a lot of trouble trying to gather the information too. Pretty sick.
Surprisingly, FOX just ran this story quoting the NYT article. They had no additions to it, they simply quoted it. Pretty disappointing.
What I got from this article was: I’d rather have my neighborhood populated with veterans that the general public.
If your statistics are correct, among the general population of the US, 0.00033% of the population would have committed a homicide in the 6 year period. Among all US veterans (there are approximately 23,532,000 currently), 0.000015% would have committed a homicide in the 6 year period. So veterans are 22 times LESS LIKELY to have committed a homicide!!!!
So, obviously, the solution is not to send people to Iraq or Afghanistan, as that turns them into killing machines. I wonder the the rates is for vets vs. non-vets? I’ll bet the rates for non-vets is much higher.
