New Giuliani ad appeals to Hispanic voters

(CNN) — As the New Hampshire primary contest wound down Tuesday, Republican Rudy Giuliani released a new Spanish language television ad in Florida – a state critical to his presidential bid. The former New York mayor has wagered his campaign on the Sunshine State after disappointing finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Illegal immigration is a top issue for Republican voters this cycle, and the candidates have stressed their get-tough position on border security and enforcement. But now the race shifts to vote-rich states with large Hispanic populations — such as New York, California and Florida — which tend to support a slightly different approach.

Fox News Sunday was also pimping Rudy big-time this morning - gave him both 10-minute segments prior to the panel discussion. At the end, Rudy did his usual "it's not amnesty" spin on his desire to give amnesty to those already here illegally. Some things never change.

Support a different approach?
In Florida we try to deport them.

Not everywhere, and not always, but it is happenning.

Rudy is a disgrace. Anyone legally elgibile to vote can speak English. Yet another reason not to vote for Rudy.

Like Fred says, “If you steal a TV and Radio and only have to give back the radio when you get caught, It’s Amnesty.” If you get the benefit of your illegal activity it is Amnesty.

Does Rudy understand how hearing an AD for PRESIDENT in Spanish makes some of us quite ill? Is it really worth it to go after the American Hispanic vote if you alienate people who are sick and tired of paying for illegal immigrants’ free services when they and their anchor babies do not even belong here?

If they are able to vote for President, they should understand the English in an ad for your campaign. You are basically calling them stupid. Or else you are pushing your appeal toward the thousands of illegals who happen to illegally carry U.S. driver’s licenses and will be voting. Either way, you lost any vote you would ever get from ME.

The goods news: my mother was a Rudy supporter, but no more.

The bad news: now she likes Huckabee.

I think that says "reduced crime" but I don't know since I can't understand spanish.

How did he reduce crime? By making illegals legal in NY?

I agree with you. Another reason not to vote for Rudy.
This shows his pandering ways. And his hypocrisy.

And before Spanish, it was Yiddish and Italian and German and Polish ......

While legal immigrants may speak and understand English, a large number of them will always be more comfortable in their first language.

Below are World War I era posters put out by the United States Food Administration and aimed at the legal immigrants living in America in 1918. The text says:

"Food will win the war - You came here seeking freedom, now you must help to preserve it - Wheat is needed for the allies - waste nothing."

Here is one in Yiddish for eastern European Jews:

Here is one for the Italians:

Here is one for English-speaking immigrants such as the Irish:

We have had spanish language television stations for decades in this country. They’re not just for illegals, although I’m sure many illegals watch them.

You’ll find english broadcasts in Latin America, and it’s not an insult to the viewers who watch them to see advertisements in English. It’s not pandering.

It’s marketing.

Exactly.

Yiddish radio survived in New York until the 1950's when the first generation immigrants finally died out below the advertising profitability tipping point.

Once immigrants get to America, it is almost impossible to retain a second language into the third generation. The second generation is more comfortable in English and passing the other language on to the third generation is just too much of a hassle.

In Cuba, my family was English-Spanish bilingual since the 1800's. My grandfather went to college in the U.S. in 1908. As a young kid in Cuba before Castro, the "grown ups" would switch to English when I was in the room and "adult stuff" needed to be discussed.

Although I tried hard to make it otherwise, my own kids are the first family generation since time of Abraham Lincoln not to be bilingual.

In 20 years, the grandkids of the viewers of Spanish TV will not be able to understand it.

I don’t know who you support, but the odds are that if he has any money, he’ll do ads in spanish. Radio ads for sure.
