IN 1972, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, the publisher of The New York Times, was looking for a conservative columnist for his left-leaning Op-Ed page.
At a charity dinner, he wound up sitting next to William Safire, the Nixon White House speechwriter who coined Spiro Agnew’s famous denunciation of the press as “nattering nabobs of negativism.” They soon had a deal.
But, as described in “The Trust,” the authoritative history of the family that has controlled The Times for more than a century, Sulzberger neglected to involve John Oakes, his cousin and the editor of the editorial page, in the decision. Oakes was appalled when he heard about the negotiations, and not realizing it was too late, offered alternatives. How about Irving Kristol, he suggested.
More than 35 years later, Sulzberger’s son, Arthur Jr. — this time in full partnership with his editorial page editor, Andrew Rosenthal — has hired another conservative columnist for their left-leaning Op-Ed page: Irving Kristol’s son, William.
The choice of Safire, who retired in 2005, set off a storm of protest. “The Times could have saved themselves about 50 grand a year if they just sent an office boy over to the White House to pick up the press releases,” fumed Nicholas von Hoffman of The Washington Post. Kristol’s appointment has not fared any better. “Pretty much the worst idea ever,” grumped Gawker, the New York media gossip Web site.

Yes, it’s certainly funny, especially that bit about hanging Kristol from a lamp post. I’m sure he’ll enjoy that.
But it’s also a bit sad. Basically, what this Public Editor or Ombudsman says is, “Hey, calm down and be rational! I wouldn’t have hired this jerk. It was a mistake, sure, but it was a well intentioned mistake! And, yes, he did betray the Glorious Freedom of the Press by suggesting that the Times should be prosecuted for leaking vital national secrets to the enemy in wartime. That was very naughty of him to say that!
But still, guys, be rational! Be LIBERAL! (And maybe in due course we can fix this stupid mistake of hiring this Nazi ogre! But far be it from me to criticize the Boss for making the mistake of hiring him.)
The Times could save a lot more than that by just sending the office boy over to DNC headquarters to get the talking points.
This fish wrapper is in free fall and this is the bone they’re throwing us to convince us they are a serious news organization and not the propaganda arm of the DNC, which they most assuredly are.

I’ve asserted, ever since I read Sowell’s “Citizen’s Guide”, that requiring basic economics training in our public schools would be enough to doom the liberal ideology to irrelevance.

I think it’s a win-win for Kristol. He gets paid well for doing a very undemanding job. He gets to laugh at the freaks who threaten to hang him from a lamp post ala Mussolini. He gets to smile provokingly at his neighbors in the office. And if the Times collapses, he goes to another job. He’s certainly getting a lot of publicity out of this one.

Does this not describe the homogeneity of the liberal hive? 699 out of 700 NY Times readers are rabid liberals who talk with, read and listen to only other rabid liberals.
