I am serious about this. I cannot believe how dismal President Clinton performed a salute and he was Commander in Chief telling military members to go fight in foreign lands. President Bush has been better, but still would like to see the candidates perform this task. Yes I know Obama will refuse just like he did with the National Anthem, but the rest might give it an honest try. I really sincerely feel this is important not just to me but also to all the military members. It shows that their boss cares about them. Any thoughts???

lol. Don’t be surprised if some of the candidates actually perform a salute like that. Ron Paul comes to mind for some reason. Maybe Huckster too.

It work so well for John Kerry, why not?

I’d like to see Obama do the old Black Power Salute after he is read the Oath of Office.

Unless they are the actual Commander in Chief I’d prefer that they not salute.

There are different salutes and differing rules on saluting from the different services. Army, and I believe Air Force, can salute indoors without a head covering, but Navy and Marines cannot, unless under arms. When a civilian politico does it in front of cameras it looks disingenuous and tacky....

Less than 8% of all living Americans have served in the military. This is meaningless, although I to cringe when I see a non veteran attempt to render a salute.

In the Navy, if your under arms, you’re covered.

The best saluters will be Duncan Hunter followed by or equal with John McCain. No two ways around it.

Sorry, but Fred Thompson doesn’t do a show of hands of any kind.
Personally I would like to see who can dance the best.
That’s going to be important if the GOP wants to compete against Obama for the youth vote.

There are different salutes and differing rules on saluting from the different services. I've noticed that folks that were in "a long time ago" don't salute the way we do now. Look a old films of WWII. Now, salutes are more standard and sharper.
On another note, John Kerry's salute at his convention was the sloppiest ever!

How about we demand mandatory military service for every young American Citizen starting at age 18? A two-year tour to start, then they can re-up or go on to college. The wash-outs won’t be any worse off.
That would accomplish far more for America than if a candidate for office can salute properly or not.

Wow! Less than 8 percent of all living Americans? That is tragic. What is wrong with all the selfish Americans? I can’t believe that dismal percentage.

Rules change over time and types of salutes are no different. I like the old Roman salute, fist to the chest and then palm extended..........

Somehow I don’t see the point in evaluating candidates based upon their level of ability to perform a practiced hand gesture.
