The McCain camp says their candidate will get a "major endorsement" today in Greenville, South Carolina. MSNBC is reporting that Senator Tom Coburn will endorse John McCain.
Don't get me wrong. It's a solid endorsement, but I don't know if you would consider it a "major endorsement." To be a major endorsement, a person really has to have national name recognition. If you line ten people up, nine out of ten probably couldn't tell you who Coburn is.
Having said that, Coburn is a nice feather in the cap. He's known for shaking up Washington because of his fights against excess federal spending in Washington. In that regard, it's a great fit for the maverick McCain and really a no-brainer. Also, Coburn is a big time social conservative so the fact that a southern senator would come out and support McCain is a big bonus.
We are starting to see a pattern develop here in the Republican nomination fight. McCain is trotting out his Senate buddies to stump for him on the trail. It has the feel of a Washington establishment candidate who is banking on his experience to win the nomination.
Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee go around talking about change and aren't as deeply entrenched with the Washington crowd.
It'll be interesting to see which philosophy and strategy win out.
Coburn...ain’t no RINO
James Coburn, one of my favorite actors, has passed on.
I like Coburn but Juan McCain can have my vote when he can pull it from my cold, dead fingers.
You may see a bloom in the spring..........
That must be what it is: members of the same club.
“Mitt thinks the conservative base is stupid.”
Maybe, but McCain flat out hates us, and for most of us it’s a mutual thing.
It's right there before your eyes....
Isn't it? I thought OK had two of the best Senators. Now, IMO, they have ONE.
Ron Paul?
I’ll vote for Hillary before I vote for a rascist.
Dr. Tom Coburn is a huge endorsement.
He likely respects McCain for his stand against earmarks and his support of our military.
It's unfortunate that he did not endorse Fred.
I would be very dissappointed that Coburn would choose McCain, although as the article states they are buddies from the Senate fighting against spending (except when McCain is not standing up with Coburn on real reform).
Let’s wait and see if Coburn actually endorses him though, since this is still a leak and not the actual story.
Do they keep ratings on how many times Republican Senators like Graham, McCain, Specter, etc., stab conservatives in the back and make certain that Republicans snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?
Equals Bloomberg.....
Almost makes one wonder what was promised to garner Coburn’s endorsement.
Not impressed with either Oklahoma senator’s endorsements, but then again, both have endorsed someone from their “fraternity” of senators. The country club seems to be growing on them.
This is a huge disappointment. What is it about this hopelessly chummy and inbred bunch of backslapping mutual suck-ups, anyhow!!?? ("My good friend and esteemed colleague...")
Republican Senators apparently are willing to hopelessly disgrace and compromise themselves in more ways than tapping a foot in bathroom stalls.
This one is a mystery. Makes no sense. Something terrible happens to people who serve in the Senate. That’s what worries me about Fred.
Coburn is a great man. Brownback isn’t a RINO, but he was very much with McCain on the amnesty bill. Thune hasn’t done enough so far as I can tell one way or another.
Coburn spoke at our local Family Alliance dinner a couple of years ago. He’s a solid limited-government conservative, and I would have expected him to endorse Thompson. Maybe he doesn’t think Thompson can win. I can’t think of a single issue on which Coburn would agree with McCain and disagree with Thompson.
Maybe he’s just more concerned with national security issues, and maybe Coburn is against torturing terrorists — I don’t know about that.
Oh Lord, I’d rather have Hillary than Bloomberg!
