Among Republicans, McCain led Huckabee by 28 percent to 23 percent as the pair took advantage of their wins in the first two nominating contests.
It was a 16-point jump for McCain from last month and a one-point increase for Huckabee, who had already begun his climb by mid-December.
"Clearly this is a post-Iowa, post-New Hampshire bounce," Zogby said.
Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister whose rise has been fueled by support from religious conservatives, led 34 percent to 22 percent among those who described themselves as "born-agains."
McCain led among independents 45 percent to 13 percent and among moderates by 53 percent to 13 percent, while McCain and Huckabee tied among Republican voters.
In third place was former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson at 14 percent, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 13 percent.
All of them shot past Giuliani, the leader in national polls for much of the year. His support has been steadily dropping, from 29 percent in November to 23 percent last month and just 9 percent this month.
The slide has raised questions about Giuliani's strategy of bypassing the early voting states to concentrate on Florida's January 29 primary and the February 5 "Super Tuesday" round of 22 state contests.
"This is what happens in a sequential process when you don't win," Zogby said. "You have to win somewhere and he hasn't."
The national survey had Republican Rep. Ron Paul at 4 percent and California Rep. Duncan Hunter at less than 1 percent.

Even though Shrillary will be easy to beat in November (she’s unelectable in a general election), I would love to see Obama knock her out in the primaries. Yes, we can beat Obama too but I just don’t know if I can suffer through Shrillary in the news cycle for the next 10 months so...go Obama!
Waits for the discrediting group to arrive.
Didn’t Zogby call Michigan for McCain? His credibility would seem to be a bit limp.
and these polls mean...what?
That's more like it.
Well, its a positive poll for Fred, to balance out the negative polls against Fred. I’ll take anything at this point.
In the case of Michigan, the polls obviously meant nothing.
Zogby sauce, but still good news
I’m very concerned about that belief that Hillary is beatable in the general election. The FEC has effectively been put out of the election regulatory oversight business and we all know how ethical and law abiding the Clintons are - NOT!!
Without an agency present to look over their shoulders and keep them honest this coming general election may end up the filthiest and most corrupt this nation has ever known.
Fred may turn out to be a genius, getting a big win in SC or FLA,or even a strong couple of second place finishes could set him up for super tuesday
They don't mean jack.
Remember how accurate to polls were in projecting the RAT victor in NH?
The only polls that count are the vote counts. And we'll know about them come Sat evening.
FRed bump!
All the more reason to hope Obama beats out Shrillary in the primaries. I don’t know why GOP is afraid of Obama in November. He’s the flavor of the moment right now but a lightweight who can be easily beat in the general.
I’d like Fred. But I’d bet on Romney.
Where does Ga fit in?
Fred is obviously after the heartland south, and so is Hucklebee.
Rudy is after the big carpetbagger south in FLA
Fred is 3rd nationally. Did anyone alert the media. All this with virtually no news coverage. I think we have a contender here. Fred Thompson takes on all comers. Someone call Don King.
GO FRED GO!
“Didnt Zogby call Michigan for McCain? His credibility would seem to be a bit limp.”
And New Hampshire for Obama by 15 points...
And 2004 for Kerry by about 60 electoral votes...
How this guy still gets work is beyond me. I don’t believe one of his polls has ever been right, within even 5%, EVER.
He has the same 13% he had in all the other polls. Romney will be third soon.
Im afraid you will still have to deal with the beast,as even if Osama wins, he will choose he for VP, watch and see.
Well I was just considering a win before super tuesday, but Ga would be a better bet,if he wins before Feb 5
