Hey All of Y'all (proper plural)! I hope this note finds each of you well.
I just wanted to let you know that I'm co-hosting a political show (I think the name is "The Boiling Point") on Chicago radio.
Here's the info: Thursdays 1:00-1:30 Listen Live - http://www.whpk.org/stream/
As today is our first stab, we might be lacking some of the political sound bites and music clips that would be desirable, but the show will still be engaging and thought-provoking. I'm sure by the second week, we'll iron out all those kinks and have everything organized. I'm just along for the ride just keeping the leftist host in check. Haha! -TexCon
Good luck!
Does the station reach the south suburbs?
Since it is a “dot.org” URL, I assume it is NPR affiliate. They gave you a time slot opposite the last hour of Rush?
Good luck...
Good Luck!
Success in college radio will grant you enormous challenges and give you a sense of the sweet taste of political power. Chase it. Court it, win it, and use it responsibly!
As a one-time college radio “star” (WYBC FM) who is still in the business, uninterrupted through deregulation and consolidation, through almost twenty years, and as someone who is in your format - talk radio - and quite successful - I offer some advice:
1. Don’t take advice from has-beens, and be very wary of advice from anyone at all. Most folks in radio these days are not out to help you, with the exception of a small handful of grey-hairs who are happily out of the saddle, were ALWAYS successful, and see the radio business for what it is.
2. Make like them. See the radio business for what it is. Radio has systematically cost-cut itself into a rather minor player (industry-wide) on the national media scene. This is true even of conservative talk, though conservative talk is the most “powerful” and for some, profitable, niche format in the business. But radio is still thinking small, following old, outdated rules, and weaseling itself, quarter by quarter, into a smaller and smaller percentage of the nationwide as dollar and audience.
3. Know the Rules. Study the greats. Read Valerie Geller’s book. Read Something In The Air. Read about Rush’s beginnings, and take advice from DEEJAYS on timing, passion, and puking. Always talk to ONE person when you’re on the air. Don’t copy talk radio stars. If you have to model anyone as you refine the “you” that is on-air, model deejays. You have your own brain. Keep it.
4. Know, in your heart, that all the bad news about radio is GREAT NEWS if you are willing to know the rules then BREAK THEM, if you are willing to push the envelope, if you understand that it’s ALL about “the show,” if you are willing to sacrifice time and money in the beginning, which means years. If you can do these things, the world is your oyster in any market.
5. Go out and sell spots and sponsorships on your show. Money is power - be connected to your advertisers.
That’s it. Carry on !

The proper terminology is all y’all! :)
Best of luck!
Good luck bump!
wow this stream is cutting out about every 10 seconds for me.
I have a suggestion for a format. You go on over to DU, invite some of them onto your show as well as some freepers, and let the sparks fly.
One frustration I have with the format on Talk Radio is that the caller gets cut off by the host. I think if you tweak that format some, where the guy talking gets 30 seconds and then he’s cut off, it won’t seem so punitive when the caller doesn’t get to talk any more.
Follow the professional talk radio broadcaster’s formula for success.
1. For politics, check FR and the top blogs.
2. For comedy relief, check fark.com, it’s worth buying a totalfark membership, it’ll keep you ahead of the news cycle.
Sean Hannity has made himself a multimillionaire using this formula.
Go for it!
Brings back memories. I had a half hour radio show in college. Ethnic music.
I’ll check it out, congrats! You only have time for one bumper song, what will you pick?
