Some students want the school administration to ban the Confederate battle flag outright, even if its presence is mainly limited at this point to small decals, belt buckles or cell phone screens kept by a small number of students... Senior Megan Allen said she's gotten about 300 of the school's roughly 1,500 students and about 20 teachers to sign her petition calling for school officials to ban the flag on campus,

Don’t flags like that usually represent a Separatist Movement?

Thanks for the ping. Good news today. Lt Governor of Virginia released a statement today recognizing Lee and Jackson. Pretty good considering the risk to any politician who is willing to stand up for anything Southern.

The flag in question is actually the flag of the army of Northern Virginia flown by Robert E. Lee who freed the slaves at Arlington upon his inheritance.

The battle flag was flown, in variations, by all Confederate armies. The part about Lee is incorrect.

"When Lee's father-in-law, George Washington Parke Custis, died in October 1857, Lee (as executor of the will) came into control over some 196 slaves on the Arlington plantation. Although the will provided for the slaves to be emancipated "in such a manner as to my executors may seem most expedient and proper", providing a maximum of five years for the legal and logistical details of manumission, Lee found himself in need of funds to pay his father-in-law's debts and repair the properties he had inherited.[7] He decided to make money during the five years that the will had allowed him control of the slaves by working them on the plantation and hiring them out to neighboring plantations and to eastern Virginia."

Robert E. Lee

"One came from Mississippi; one from J.B. Walton and E.C. Hancock, which coincided with the design of Colonel Miles. The matter was freely discussed at headquarters, till, finally, when he arrived at Fairfax Court House, General Beauregard caused his draughtsman (a German) to make drawings of all the various designs which had been submitted. With these designs before them, the officers at headquarters agreed on the famous old banner -- the red field, the blue cross, and the white stars. The flag was then submitted to the War Department, and was approved."

Yes, lets ban the Stars and Bars, right after the Mexican flag and the Rainbow flag.

But the Mexican and Fag flags aren't symbols of hate. /sarc

Let's just ban everything associated with ANY part of history they don't like.

Or re-write it to make it politically correct.

You won’t get many points here by citing Wikipedia articles to support a claim, even if in this instance (Lee’s continued use of the Arlington slaves) the article appears to be essentially correct.

It sounds like Megan Allen is being disruptive to the learning environment and intolerant of diversity.

I’m sure those students displaying the flag are just using their first amendment rights in order to start a dialog on race relations.

Well, let’s see, 300 out of 1500 are going right along with the plan to become Liberal Fascists. Sounds like the rest know it’s a bunch of crap. I am willing to bet that the 20 teachers who signed are a higher percentage of total teachers than the percentage of student signers are of all the students. And what the heck are teachers signing petitions that violate their students first amendment rights. They’re supposed to KNOW better.

Maybe this will make you happy (like I care):

"When Custis died in 1857, Robert E. Lee—the executor of the estate—determined that the slave labor was necessary to improve Arlington's financial status. The Arlington slaves found Lee to be a more stringent taskmaster than his predacessor. Eleven slaves were “hired out” while others were sent to the Pamunkey River estates. In accordance with Custis's instructions, Lee officially freed the slaves on December 29, 1862."

NOT FAR.

otoh, most DAMNyankees LIKE the Mexican flag MUCH better than the CSA's flag. (after all, DYs generally aren't real patriots, but rather just "haters". next year it may be the Mexican flag that you DYs rally against. or perhaps the US flag???)

“Maybe this will make you happy (like I care).”

What would make me happy is if people would display a bit less sloth and stop using Wikipedia as if it were a serious source of facts (like I expect you to do so).

“I’ll use any source that I please.”

And I’ll continue to be skeptical of any alleged “facts” sourced from Wikipedia.

"If we have a hostile environment for even one student, then we need to rethink the policy,"

Sounds like they want to make it a hostile environment for a bunch of kids - by giving in to the demands of a few.
