Fred update: He’s staying if he finishes third in SC; Update: Fred third in SC

Watch as the goalposts move before your very eyes, with less contested southern states like Georgia and Tennessee now the benchmark for voter enthusiasm.

Third in SC is very much a possibility, of course — but early indications from Carl Cameron are not good.

Politico says he sounds wistful on the trail today while the NYT seizes one last opportunity to snark. “Amen! Tell the truth, Fred! Amen!”

Update: Victory in defeat:

Over the past month, Huckabee first surged in polls of South Carolina Republicans, from fifth place to, for a time, a solid first place. Over the past two weeks, however, he has fallen behind McCain, largely for two reasons: McCain got a major boost from his January 8 New Hampshire win, and the struggling campaign of Fred Thompson made a last ditch effort to get on track here. While well behind and tied for third place with Romney, Thompson did make gains, and the data suggest that virtually every point Thompson picked up came out of Huckabee’s hide.

We’d survive that too. I’m talking survival and not prosperity.

If you closed your eyes, do you think you would be able to tell the difference between a Huckabee presidency and a Hillary presidency? I don’t think I would, but that’s just me. :-)

I know that wasn’t the point of your post, but I just had to say it. lol

The SCOTUS appointments can rule on Roe V Wade, 2nd Amendment and a host of other issues including illegals that we will not survive. THAT is the contention in this race.

I completely understand. I just don’t agree about the “surviving” part. I have to draw in my reserves of Reagan optimism, but I can see the country even surviving a Hillary.

If not Fred, then Romney (w/a pinched nose). ANYTHING but Flunkabee.

The mere thought of a Huckabee family picture being attached to the Whitehouse Christmas card makes my butt pucker.

I love Fred, but I really hope he drops out at this point.

His voters are NOT going to go to McCain, regardless of the friendship between the two men.

McCain must be stopped.

I hope you are not breaking the McCain/Feingold law discussing your vote.

Amen. That and the WOT are the reason our country can not afford even a one term Democrat POTUS. I still think that if Hillary gets the nomination, whoever wins for the Pubbies will have a chance because she is such a horrible candidate and her negatives are so high. The problem would be if conservatives sit out the election or vote third party. Then we would have no one to blame but ourselves if Hillary and Bill (ugh!) make it back to the WH.

It’s McCain who can take down the beast. Its his national security stance and experience that will nail her..... Huckster would be a huge longshot although people fall for him quickly and his story to date is beyond belief.... really an outsider like this doing this well says alot about Americans and the want for something new.

Rudy could have been the one but his tactics to date are a mystery to me.

This is going to be a long year.
