What's a Fredhead to do??
1/20/2008 | Skully

Fred Thompson's distant third in last night's South Carolina primary, has me re-thinking my support. I say this with disappointment, " I don't think Fred can win the nomination". Part of me wants to support him to the bitter end. Another part feels that in doing so I may only be helping McCain or Huckabee; my least 2 favorite candidates. I live in a Super Tuesday state, and my vote may actually matter this cycle, so I want to use it wisely. The only other candidates who seems like they can stop McCain or Huckabee is Romney or Rudy. If McCain wins in Florida, then he's in good shape to be the nominee. Polling analysis, done before Nevada and South Carolina primary; has him in the lead in Florida at around 23% about a 2 point lead over Rudy whose at 21-22%. Romney is around 18%, Hucakabee 15%, Fred 7%, and Paul 5%. Florida is a winner take all state, so whoever wins will have solid delegate count. Romney has the most delegate at this point, counts vary from source to source, but I put him at 72 to McCain's 38. So a win from Romney in Florida would give him a solid lead going into Super Tuesday. A win by Rudy would knock McCain into 3rd in the delegate count. So my quandry is do I continue to support Fred, or put my support behind a candidate who has a better chance of stopping McCain. In the end I will vote for the GOP nominee regardless. This is only because the troops are deployed, and they don't deserve a Commander-In-Chief from the party that tried to lose the war for them. So the primary is where my vote counts the most, and I want to put the "best man possible" for the job on the ticket. Unfortunately it dosen't look like the "best man" for the job will be at the top of that ticket, but there's is another spot on that ticket. Hey it might be wishful thinking, but what's a Fredhead to do??

How is Rudy ANY better than McLame???? An UBER Liberal vs. a RINO psycho? They both are a VERY bad choice.

Agreed.

The RINO, Rockefeller Republicans would rather be in the minority and invited to all the Washington parties than support/do what is right for the future of the country.

I fear the country is headed for another Clinton presidency, which will be far worse than Bill's - not because of the Clintons themselves, but because of world events we know nothing about yet and their "response" to those events.

I fear for the future of my country. :(

No problem. I do agree with you that Mitt is no Conservative but, I would much rather see a successful non-DC executive as POTUS than a RINO senator who never ran anything but a committee.

Let’s see what Fred does first between now and Super Tuesday. If he fails, I think Romney gets my support.

I have to agree with you. Romney is my second choice but, it’s my understanding, that all the primaries have been open so far. Let’s see what Fred can do when only the Republicans are voting on the pubbie ballot.

If the DNC and the MSM manage to create a REAL recession, and a demo wins the WH, it wont be pretty. Never has.

A vote for Rudy is a slap in the face to values voters. A vote for Huck will lose in November. Fred has never won a primary and is not going to. The compromise is?

Isn't a vote for Romney a slap in the face of value voters as well? Pro-abort. Published papers that were pro-homosexual. I don't think I can go that route either.

know that McCain and Huckabee will fade soon and I see the chance for Fred to make another surge after the debate from Palm BEach this coming Thursday. I am with Fred through Super Tuesday if he is still fighting!

Now that is reasonable and well thought out.

This whole post is nothing more than the same old BS, of attempting to scare people in to supporting their rino.

Like another poster claimed, it is like trying to choose diarrhea over vomiting

If I recall correctly from my much younger days, there was a joke about taking a companion out in the backyard and turning the hose on him after a long evening of self-inflicted poisoning, because that would rinse the problem away, no matter what form it took.

"Write him in for Pres in Nov and until then,..."

Perhaps you didn't read what skully stated: "In the end I will vote for the GOP nominee regardless. This is only because the troops are deployed, and they don't deserve a Commander-In-Chief from the party that tried to lose the war for them."

Any Conservative who allows a Democrat into the Whitehouse to become Commander-in-Chief of the US Armed Forces and who allows a Democrat to appoint the next three Supreme Court Justices should be charged with treason and swung from a 200 year oak tree!

I've been casually taking swipes at Mitt Romney for the past year based on the assumption that, in the end, Republicans would choose him as our nominee.

Interesting. On what page in the DSM-IV is that disorder discussed?

Yes, some of it will go there. But I am going to do all that I can to protect the 2nd amendment with anti-gun being the nominees.

Ah, but some would rather be pure and dead in the ditch than to cede their right of way to the oncoming truck.

The quest for the immaculate Conservative continues. Electability is hardly even an issue when someone would rather their issues loose to teach the proponents of those issues ‘a lesson’ for not advancing those issues hard enough. If they didn’t learn last time (and I mean the voters AND our Republican elected officials), they aint’ ever going to learn. But teach on. Maybe we can keep the “I’m taking my ball and going HOME!” crybaby conservatism to a minimum. As you pointed out it destroys the party and the issue if its proponents are finicky at the polls.

I don’t think I’ve given up too easily. I supported Fred before he was a candidate. I supported Fred when he became a candidate. I supported Fred when the drive bys said Fred didn’t support Fred. I’ve supported Fred through several primaries, and the results aren’t encouraging. My primary vote has more weight to me then my GE vote this cycle. I want to use it the most effective way I can. I’ll wait and see what happens in Florida. I’ve got until Feb. 5th to decide.
