Right To Life Group Sends Plastic Fetus In Mail

RACINE, Wis. -- A right to life group in Racine is under fire after mailing controversial material to 44,000 people.

It included an informational letter, a fundraising envelope and a small plastic fetus.

Mystical Listrom said she was not happy with what she found inside when she opened a letter from Wisconsin Right to Life accompanied by a plastic fetus.

"It's my right to choose to do what I want with my body. I shouldn't have people telling me what I can and can't do with my body," Listrom said.

Her neighbor, Glenda Pollock, got the same package.

"If they had sent a letter explaining why they think abortion should not be allowed, I wouldn't have a problem with that. It was the plastic fetus that bothered me," Pollock said.

"We thought it would be appropriate to send out some information to get people talking about the subject," said Dave Obernberger of Wisconsin Right to Life.

Dave and Bonnie Obernberger, with the Racine County chapter of Wisconsin Right to Life, are the people behind the mailing.

They said the plastic figure represents an 11- or 12-week fetus.

They sent it out this week to mark the 35-year anniversary of Roe Vs. Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

"I pray that they'll look at it a little more than being offended by it, but being educated by it," Dave Obernberger said.

The Obernbergers said they have already gotten some response, and they expect more.

Pollock wasted no time having her voice heard. She brought the package to the post office and mailed it back.

"I had to pay to have it returned because it was a non-profit mailing, which I was happy to pay. It was just over $1 and it was well worth it," Pollock said.

Pollock filed a complaint with the U.S. Postal Service; however, it doesn't appear to be illegal.

Postal officials said it doesn't fit their standards of obscene or lewd, but they said people can fill out a form that would prevent them from getting mail from Wisconsin Right to Life in the future.

The mailers were sent to every home in Racine and to some of the surrounding suburbs.

Oh, yes, and also unsolicited ties from the Blind Society; handkerchiefs with Oral Robert’s tears on them; boxes of dirt from Jerusalem; splinters of the True Cross; and oodles of boxes of Christmas cards, to mention a few things I’ve been sent over the years.

At least the little plastic baby serves a useful purpose: to announce to 40,000 Wisconsin residents that BABIES (born and unborn) ARE PEOPLE, TOO!

I’m sorry but this is not how you win hearts and minds.

It's a little plastic model. What's the harm? It's not like a grotesque photo of mutilation that some whackos have sent and/or displayed. I could tell you a story about one of those guys on a street corner, except it didn't go well for him and I'd rather not incriminate myself should he still be eating from a straw.

Ultrasounds have been extremely successful at preventing abortion. They should be used much more often. Hell, if abortion has to be legal, why not mandate a pre-abortion ultrasound?

I am on the Board of Directors of a Crisis Pregnancy Center. We offer pregnancy tests, counselling, sonograms, material help for nine months after the birth of the baby if that is what the woman chooses, definitely promotion of the adoption option, and referral for support for post-abortion trauma.

I’ve asked this before and I’ll ask this again; Why don’t the anti-abortion crowd approach this problem from the angle of pushing ADOPTION, versus stopping abortion?

&&&&

Very often a woman chooses abortion over adoption, because she cannot visualize her living child living with someone else! Adoption as an option is definitely discussed and promoted.

Personally, I am all in favor of a woman’s right to choose to do with her body whatever she likes... right up to the moment she chooses to do something she KNOWS can create a new life in her... then the choice has been made and the consequence must follow. Put the child up for adoption if she must, but do not KILL it. That is NOT a choice. It’s murder.

I am ecstatic that my son and daughter in law just had their first child (a daughter) on Friday last. She will be the most wanted CHOICE they have ever made. Because they chose to do the right thing from the start.

How Bizarre! Killing and dismembering tiny humans is not wrong. But reminding their actual and potential killers of what their victims look like is wrong. This is reason turned upside down.

I always wonder about the mailers I get with 1/4 oz. tubes of free-sample "age-defying skin cream." With, of course, order forms to buy the jumbo size of this miraculous skin-rejuvenating product.

Hmm. Weird. Total strangers, yet they know my name. They know where I live. And--- they know I have wrinkles!!

najida, your line of thinking applies to all those who have ever suffered a great loss. I have a niece, who in her twenties suddenly lost her young husband in an auto accident. For a long time, she couldn’t go to the Mall, because she was saddened by all the young couples there...by all the vibrant young women who still had their beloved guys at their side.

So, all the couples in her town should have stopped going to the Mall, out of fear of hurting the widows who were still grieving?

Think about it. Whose job is it to get over the grief, the loss, and yes—the guilt? The general public? Or the one who suffered the loss?

The issue is private space versus public..... mail (your home) versus venturing into the mall (public).

For example, if your niece doesn’t have the right to tell people what to do at the mall, however, if she doesn’t want to invite couples into her home, that’s her right and perfectly OK.

If a couple knocks on her door, insisting on talking to her about the joys of marriage and asking her questions about hers etc, she has the right to be pissed off and tell them to leave. And even tell them to never come around again.
