Giuliani trailing on home ground: (WNBC/Marist - NY) poll

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is trailing in the race for the Republican presidential nomination even on his home turf of New York state, a new poll showed on Monday.

The WNBC/Marist poll ahead of the February 5 primaries in New York showed 34 percent of registered Republicans support John McCain, compared to 23 percent for Giuliani. Among Republicans likely to vote, McCain kept his 34 percent support, while Giuliani was tied in second place with Mitt Romney at 19 percent.

McCain's campaign has been boosted by wins in New Hampshire and South Carolina in the state-by-state race to pick the two candidates to contest the November 4 election to succeed President George W. Bush.

Giuliani, whose once large lead in national polls has evaporated, largely bypassed early voting states and focused on Florida, which votes on January 29.

As the former New York mayor who won national recognition in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Giuliani would hope for a strong showing in New York.

But the poll showed 46 percent of registered Republicans in New York think Arizona Sen. McCain is the Republican most likely to beat the Democratic candidate in November. Nineteen percent saw former Massachusetts Gov. Romney as the most electable and 15 percent picked Giuliani as most electable.

Another local politician, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, appeared to be in a strong position ahead of the New York primary for the Democratic Party nomination.

The poll showed her with the support of 48 percent of Democrats likely to vote in the primary, followed by Illinois Sen. Barack Obama with 32 percent.

The survey of 1,467 New York state registered voters was conducted January 15-17, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent, the poll said.

Neither party has established a clear front-runner, as the first major state-by-state battles produced multiple winners.

It's looking like Giuliani won't even win a single state.

Take lessons from Willard, Rudy, and learn to lie more if you ever decide to run again.

While I am hoping for a conservative (Fred or Mitt), Rudy has at least accomplished things McCain could only dream of.

If anyone ever spent time in NYC during the General Dinkens era and then after Rudy had been mayor for a while, you know the difference. Gotta give Rudy a lot of credit for making a then hopeless city cleaner, safer and worth spending time in.

You can say that again.

I think all of our candidates, excluding McCain, have greater curb appeal than She Who Must Be Obeyed. Like-ability, is a factor in an election. (Of course as I write this, I wonder why McCain polls above single digits since the guy is not likaeable IMHO. Perhaps the same thought is going on over on the other side. A lot of Dems must be thinking Obama is more likable, why is Hill stomping all over his lunch).

Remember, folks...

Most of the Republicans in New York are upstate, not downstate. We never elected Giuliani.

My question is, though, why are they only having a poll about Fred? Why don’t they care if anyone else may drop out or not, such as Edwards who has consistently been running third, or Huckabee, who hasn’t won a primary since Idaho, even though he did campaign in all of the states, whereas Fred only campaigned in 2?

"He's the gutless warrior. Rudy is a talker, not a fighter. He has to win Florida or he's a goner."

You know, just days ago two inquisitive young men asked Rudy questions about his abortion stance and Julie-Annie "cut-n-run". With an inability to stand his ground when directly challenged, it's beginning to take its toll on him. He talks the big talk, but runs like a cheap water-color when someone rains on his parade.

Yeah---the sucker was so scared when confronted by pro-lifers, he ran the other way---had to cancel the campaign event.

From the getgo, Rooty and his backers were colluding to religiously cleanse the Repub party--- and dump social conservatives----the most important base of the party.

Rooty's stupid plan was based on the ignorant assumption that conservatives were going to roll over and play dead.

That ain't happening.

Thus, he chickened out of the Senate race vs. Hillary

Doesn't take much to show your ignorance - just one sentence will do. Check yourselves - you believe what you want to believe and that doesn't make it truth.

Good post.

What are McCrazy’s accomplishments? What are Mitt’s? Obama’s? hillary’s? Some people can’t see beyond their stuffed up self-righteous nose. While standing on ‘principle’ they twist events to suit themselves. Their self rightousness has blinded them - just what the liberals hoped for as they lead them to the slaughter.

I laugh because they think they are so well informed - while the liberals say, ‘gotcha’. What a bunch of chumps.
