Unreal ID (Illegal immigrants will always drive says lib-Balt-Sun)
Baltimore Sun ^ | January 22, 2008 | sun editorial

It appears Maryland will sit out the state rebellion against the federal Real ID program. Gov. Martin O'Malley's announcement last week that the Motor Vehicle Administration will comply with the costly and controversial program is unfortunate but not entirely unexpected.

As recently as last month, MVA officials had been floating the idea of a two-tiered approach to driver's licenses that would create one that met federal security standards and one that didn't require so-called proof of legal presence. But no doubt the negative reaction given New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's similar proposal (from which he eventually backed down) had something to do with it.

So here's the consequence: By 2010, current and future driver's license holders will have to provide far more elaborate proof of identity and residency. For most people, that means original birth certificates and Social Security cards (not just numbers or copies) and waiting in long lines at local MVA offices, which will be swamped.

Illegal immigrants won't necessarily stop driving, but they likely won't be licensed, trained or have car insurance - bad news for the rest of us. Their lives, as members of the country's 11 million undocumented underclass, are just going to get a little worse.

Such a sacrifice might seem acceptable if it ensured the nation's safety, but it doesn't. Surely any terrorist capable of sneaking into the country is equally adept at forging a birth certificate from one of the 6,000 agencies that produce them. And, of course, the next Timothy McVeigh will suffer no particular hardship.

Some states have objected to this program - seven have refused to comply, and 17 have passed legislation condemning it.

Perhaps the program may yet be undone by the White House's next occupant. Maryland will just have to watch from the sidelines.

What complete and utter balderdash.

So here's the consequence: By 2010, current and future driver's license holders will have to provide far more elaborate proof of identity and residency. For most people, that means original birth certificates and Social Security cards (not just numbers or copies) and waiting in long lines at local MVA offices, which will be swamped.

So we shouldn't do it since it unfairly burdens citizens?

… And, of course, the next Timothy McVeigh will suffer no particular hardship.

Unless they're citizens who are scary domestic terrorists of course, presumably they'll have their own line. Give me strength.

RE : but I am genuinely not seeing it. “

There is no requirement that the foreign documentation show that the person is here legally. The foreign passport or birth certificate says nothing about the person being here legally.
Democrat Gov O”Malley proved it when he proposed parallel drivers licenses this month. If MD was not purposefully giving licenses to illegals he would not have proposed special illegal licenses so they could continue driving. Have you been following this issue at all???

Example :

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1938822/posts?page=51#51

1) Primary :

Foreign/Out-of-Country documents may be used as a primary/secondary source of identification if translated into English by a
Maryland District Court interpreter/translator, an MVA approved interpreter/translator, or the Embassy of the country where issued

It isn't about the driver's license.

The unstated issue is expanding the right to vote to illegals. The MSM and democrats want that big-time. Auto-Fraudo (motor voter) requires the states' dmv's to offer every applicant the opportunity to register to vote. At the same time, they are forbidden to ask if the potential applicant is qualified or to inform of the requirements.

Licensing illegals is all about diluting republican votes. (dems know that as law-breakers, illegals are likely democrat party members)

"Perhaps the program may yet be undone by the White House's next occupant..."

Uh, huh, displaying a total lack of knowledge of how laws are passed in this country and the power of the executive to "undo" law. But I do think we ought to ask all those vying for the White House what they plan to do.

Exactly. Someone else mentioned it this way, but it describes the situation perfectly... a driver's license for any illegal is basically amnesty at the state level. Once you have one, you're legit.

Good. Maybe they'll leave and stop sucking on my recently-increased taxes.

Personally, I try not to hate liberals. I would end up hating most people in this state, as well as some of my friends. But it’s hard, I know.

And if the Frederalist drops out (for understandable reasons), we’ll have the choice of Mitt-wit, Health Nut Huckabee, McKook, Rooty, and RuPaul. Wheeeeeeeee!

Actually, we zig roughly when Kalifornia zigs. California commits to reducing GHGs by 80 percent, Moron O’Malice ups the ante with a goal of 90 percent. Schwarzedoofus signs microstamping legislation. Moron O’Malice, any time to be, I predict.

Listen to this propaganda from the NYT

why can’t these people use their REAL ID? Mexican licenses are perfectly legal in the US.
