Homosexual Groups Invited to Work to Curb Spread of MRSA
ChristianNewsWire ^ | 01/22/08 | Concerned Women for America

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 /Christian Newswire/ -- Because Concerned Women for America (CWA) cares deeply for the health and well being of all Americans, CWA is sending letters inviting the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, GLAAD and Lambda Legal to put aside profound ideological differences with CWA — for the sake of the lives and health of their members — and to call for commonsense steps to help curb the spread of a potentially deadly strain of Staph infection.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA bacteria, is infecting men who have sex with men in major cities at an alarming rate. A study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that "gay" men are 13 times more likely to contract the infection.

The study determined that the spread of MRSA, "among men who have sex with men is associated with high-risk behaviors, including use of methamphetamine and other illicit drugs, sex with multiple partners, participation in a group sex party, use of the internet for sexual contacts, skin-abrading sex, and history of sexually transmitted infections." But ultimately, the study warned that, "Having male-male sex seems to be a risk factor for [MRSA]."

Dr. Binh Diep, the researcher who led the study, told Reuters, "Once this reaches the general population, it will be truly unstoppable." The study found that the "[MRSA] epidemic probably started in San Francisco and has been disseminated by the frequent cross-coastal travel of men who have sex with men."

Matt Barber, CWA's Policy Director for Cultural Issues, said, "We now have a wonderful opportunity for ideological opponents to come together for the common good. Steps must be taken to keep this MRSA outbreak, which is occurring within certain segments of the homosexual community, from becoming a more widespread epidemic.

"HRC and other homosexual groups have a profound leadership role in their communities and a responsibility to protect their members from behaviorally related threats to their health and well-being. Therefore, these groups should publicly condemn those specific 'high-risk behaviors' which this study has concluded are responsible for spreading MRSA among homosexuals.

"We're asking HRC and other groups to denounce, through word and deed, 'sex with multiple partners,' 'group sex [parties]' and to actively promote the notion that it is never okay to 'use methamphetamine and other illicit drugs.'"

"In light of this behaviorally related MRSA outbreak," said Barber, "we additionally ask HRC and other groups to call on local health agencies to shut down the many bathhouses and sex clubs around the country where men meet for anonymous sex with other men, often multiple partners, on a daily basis. These places create the 'perfect storm' for infectious disease, including MRSA.

"Now's the time for us all to come together," concluded Barber. "Let's do what needs to be done to help curtail this regrettable MRSA outbreak."

Suggest closing the bathhouses and see all the maries get up in arms.

Maybe they could start by getting mental help so they won’t feel the need to engage in the filthy perverted practices that cause the spread of disease.

I have a co-worker who is a male homosexual. My first reaction to him was (silently) "whatever you do, please don't touch me." Just the thought gave me the shivers.

Don’t know offhand, but when I read it, I assumed that it meant any kind of activity that breaks the skin or is likely to break the skin so that blood is released.

No, it's a euphemism for anal sex, protected or unprotected.

The lining of the rectum tears far more easily than does that of the vagina. A "receiving" person can get tears and lesions in their rectum even when their partner uses a condom.

Then they subsequently self infect themselves with their own feces.

Pleasant, isn't it?

Anal sex just doesn't sound as romantic when you put it that way.

HA HA HA HA HA HA...NICE. But the sorry facts of this is that, like AIDS (Formerly known as GRID or Gay related imminodeficiency disease), The name will be changed into something that seems like the disease was caused by some person who breathed toxic city air and the spread will be by a lack of federal funding. Mark my words.

Word to the wise: Never accept any form of food from this guy (and others like him) that you don't have to peel, uncork, tear open, or break to eat. IOW, you can accept an orange but not an apple; a Hersey bar but not a bakery muffin; a can of soda but not a glass of soda; an unshelled hard boiled egg but not a deviled egg, etc.

Better a live pessimist than a dead optimist.

I believe it is “code” for using a common human “exit” as an “entrance” for a male body part. I would think that might “abrade” just a bit, but I am happy to say that I am neither an expert nor an amateur in that regard.

Well, here's a paragraph from the study that suggests that "skin-abrading sex" is in addition to anal sex (sand-paper? don't wanna know) and that the consequences can include necrotizing fasciitis of the affected parts, which ought to scare off even those not scared by death, but - maybe that's not enough to scare meth-using bug chasers.

Spread of the USA300 clone among men who have sex with men is associated with high-risk behaviors, including use of methamphetamine and other illicit drugs, sex with multiple partners, participation in a group sex party, use of the internet for sexual contacts, skin-abrading sex, and history of sexually transmitted infections (41–43). The same patterns of increased sexual risk behaviors among men who have sex with men—which have resulted from changes in beliefs regarding HIV disease severity with the availability of potent antiretroviral therapy—have been driving resurgent epidemics of early syphilis, rectal gonorrhea, and new HIV infections in San Francisco, Boston, and elsewhere (44–46). Our findings that 27% (32 of 118) of men who have sex with men from the SFGH HIV clinic and 39% (47 of 121) of men who have sex with men from Fenway Community Health had infections involving buttocks, genitals, or perineum are consistent with sexual transmission of USA300 in this population. Cook and colleagues (47) recently reported MRSA infections involving the buttocks or genitoperineal area of heterosexual partners; these community-associated MRSA infections can progress to necrotizing fasciitis of the genitoperineal region (Fournier gangrene) (48). It is not clear whether the behavior potentiating these infections among men who have sex with men is anal sex (that is, dissemination of rectal carriage of community-associated MRSA), skin-abrading sexual practices, or increased frequency of intimate skin-to-skin contact; prevention messages may therefore need to suggest caution in each of these practices.

These organizations have called for common sense steps...like, for instance, recommending that their members stop doing some things with their rectums that aren't in the original design specifications?

[Crickets chirping]

Yeah, I thought so - they'll never recommend that.
