Anti-Obama smear campaign gets rolling in South Carolina
L.A. Times ^ | Jan. 23, 2008 | Seema Mehta

South Carolina has a history of rough politics.

Allright, they're downright mean and dirty. Sen. John McCain wasn't the first to get a bitter taste of that in 2000. And now, it seems, some anonymous sources are trying the same smear tactics on Sen. Barack Obama in advance of Saturday's state Democratic presidential primary.

There's a whispering campaign underway across the entire state, often using forwarded e-mails, suggesting that Obama is a closet Muslim schooled in anti-American lessons who refuses to take the Pledge of Allegiance.

To be honest though, Illinois politics is no kindergarten either. So Obama's campaign....

was ready. It has sent out a new mailer with the large headline: "COMMITTED CHRISTIAN," depicting the candidate in a church pulpit before a large white cross. It talks about how Obama accepted Jesus Christ in his life.

Obama hasn't hesitated to raise his faith while speaking, but now it's become even more prominent. “I’ve been at the same church, the same Christian church for almost 20 years," he said at a recent Columbia rally. "My wife and I were married in that church, our children were dedicated in that church. I was sworn in with my hand on the family bible. Whenever I’m in the U.S. Senate, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.” Then, he added, “If you get some silly e-mail, send it back …Tell them this is all crazy.”

During Monday's acrid Democratic debate in Myrtle Beach, he still managed to slip in, “I am a proud Christian.”

And Obama supporter Sen. John Kerry responded in greater detail in a Tuesday e-mail: “Some of you may have heard about the disgusting lies about Barack Obama that are being circulated by e-mail,"

Alright, let me be the first to say it: why exactly would this hurt him in a Democratic primary?

why is it a smear campaign when you say (or write) the truth that the guy (Obama-lama-ding dong) is an empty suit, has zero credibility, and is wrong on every issue of substance (as his voting record would indicate)?

Oh...I see it’s cuz it’s the L.A. Times writing that it’s a “smear” campaign...oh I see...

The answer is something to keep in mind next time someone suggests Republicans are islamophobes, bigots, fearmongerers, etc.

It isn’t South Carolina that has a history of “rough, mean, dirty” politics. He’s made the mistake of going up against the Clinton Machine. He’s lucky if lible is the worst that happens to him.

Or, mention how they voted on an issue in the past?

I agree. Apparently, anything a candidate did, said, or wrote in the past is considered smearing nowadays.

Trinity United Church of Christ on BLACK VALUE SYSTEM:

#11. Pledge allegiance to all Black leaders who espouse and embrace black value system.

To whom does this refer? Sharpton? Jackson? Louis Farrakhan (Nation of Islam)?, maybe Luo Tribe Leaders?

Obama’s response isn’t good enough.

He should get on TV, look the voter in the eye, and say, “Hillary Clinton has a long history of lying and smearing good people’s names. Ask any of her husband’s many rape victims, all of whom Hillary attacked without mercy.”

Now THAT would raise some eyebrows, Obama. Do you have the b@lls?

Whenever I’m in the U.S. Senate, I pledge allegiance to the flag

What about everywhere else? Rather a isolated qualifier...

While you're at it, O, how about answering all the points in this:

The reply that Dems will have ready for you is that they want to win in November, and they anticipate that the big bad Republicans will play to the country’s fear of Islam and blacks, so they want to field a strong candidate that won’t be subject to this criticism. In other words, Dems don’t trust us stupid Americans to make the right choice and vote for them.

Since when is telling the truth a smear?Obviously it's not. However they are not telling the truth, they are LYING. To wit:

Obama is a Christian, as he claims, by all accounts. Obama was not sworn in on a Koran.

Those are LIES. There is plenty, plenty, to dissuade people from voting for Obama about, but they are not using issues or even REAL personal history. They are simply lying.

They = Clintons and their machine. The same people who have lied about Bush (the "Bush Lied" lie, the AWOL lie, etc.)

I don't agree with the Clinton Machine slash-and-burn politics regardless of who the target is.

John F. Kerry is the worst possible person to complain about this. Obama should politily ask him to shut up.

Isn't "Proud" "Christian" a contradiction of terms?

When is he going to be baptized?

That would go a long way to ending these "rumors."
