Duncan Hunter Endorses Mike Huckabee
National Review Online ^ | 1-23-08 | Byron York

Posted on 01/23/2008 12:29:02 PM PST by TitansAFC

This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America‚s industrial base."

"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.

Wow, that’s a disappointment. Foolish wasted endorsement.

Maybe Hunter was too busy campaigning to read up on Huckster’s real record.

Some of the Fred and Paul people tried to inform the Duncan Hunter fans that maybe he was a bit TOO protectionist from a trade standpoint and his actual voting record revealed some flaws.

I wasn’t against him and was INITIALLY enthused but he just couldn’t drum up support.

I think we should all vote for Rudy now, out of spite.

Yes, the one they chased out of the organization for alleged improprieties.

And then after endorsing he backed off and said it was only a conditional endorsement, and that he could withdraw it if his candidate misbehaved.

I actually was not that much attracted to Duncan Hunter, but I at least thought he was honest about his immigration stance.

Apparently not.

Yep. It is a huge disappointment. If those on FR didn’t support Fred because he endorsed McCain in 2000, makes me wonder if the Hunter folks will choose not to support him again if he runs.

I’m frustrated by this as well... but look at it this way. Huckabee is the only guy Hunter is still on good terms with. Hunter has criticized Romney on Bain Capital, McCain on immigration, Thompson on China (though he’s not a factor now), and said he would not compromise on Abortion (nixing Giuliani). Huckabee has complemented Hunter... so this is his only shot at a cabinet position or VP run. Not sure if I agree or like it yet... but I can understand partially his reasoning. Hunter is idealistic, and he has things he wants to get done and right now this may be his only avenue to do it.

“Well... what next? Thompson endorsing Goofball Paul? LOL”

I am rooting for McCain to withdraw and endorse ... Obama.

Ann’s been leaning that way since before CPAC. She liked Hunter, but she never had any delusions about his prospects.

Just calm down and think about it.

How much influence does the POTUS have on your daily life? We survived Bill Clinton because he was a lazy good for nothing wastrel.

We will not survive Hellary Clinton because she is a meddling, bossy, vindictive, socialist harridan.

Take a principled stand and don’t vote in your GOP primaries - let the GOP candidate be chosen by their true believers/supporters (whatever the outcome).

Only vote in the General - for Hellary’s opponent.

Then you can live with yourselves.

Mom

Even with that signature, NumbersUSA still ranks Mitt Romney higher than Huckabee on the immigration issues.

Huckabee is a good guy despite what all these folks say on Freepers, if they got to know him, and talked to him, and spend some time with him they’d think otherwise ....

I agree with you that he's a good guy; I have met him. But you know what? I think Obama's a good guy too. You know what they have in common? Neither one should be allowed anywhere near the White House.

He may be looking at Huck as the most likely candidate to follow the will of the people. We’ve still got a long way to go so I’m still taking the wait and see approach.

NO HUNTER-say it ain’t so!!!! I am completely blown away by this. Though Huckabee is clearly a strong Christian, his spending in AR, tax increases, his stand on abortion as a state issue, his scholarships for childrenof illegal immigrants???? Not the conservative I am looking for

I totally agree. I liked him alot, but had a few reservations. One of them being why he couldn’t get support.

Maybe an endorsement like this is the reason.
