A waterspout came on shore as a weak tornado Thursday night and tore the roof off an empty air station hangar at the Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu, authorities said.
An air traffic controller at the base spotted the tornado about a quarter-mile away, said Bill Hoffer, a spokesman for the National Weather Service in Oxnard. The waterspout's vortex was reportedly almost horizontal as it was pushed on shore by gusting winds, he said.
The tornado touched down shortly after 7 p.m., ripping off the hangar's roof and scattering debris on the runway, according to CS3 Lester Brown, who works on the quartermaster's deck. No one was injured.
Hoffer said waterspouts have been forming periodically throughout this week's storms, and the National Weather Service has issued a special marine warning that any thunderstorm could produce a waterspout, gusty wind, high waves, lightning and heavy rain.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning Thursday night for southwest Los Angeles County, including Malibu, Pacific Palisades and the Topanga area.
You know, there were no waterspouts before Bush.

In Californis we don’t know how to handle tornados. We much prefer earthquakes.

I’m waiting for the time that we have an earthquake, tsunami, tornado and wildfires on the same day, along with a border fence collapse.
My older brother was XO at Pt. Mugu many years ago.
Yup - I’m in California, and we get tornados too... About 10 years ago one was in Long Beach not far from me. It took off the roof of a supermarket... But we don’t have the kind of thing one sees in Kansas or Oklahoma... We still cede the championship to them....
BTW - The Supermarket was a “Lucky”. It was lucky to survive the tornado, and was repaired, but was unLucky as it was taken over by the Albertson’s chain... I was in that market just last week and 10 years out, no sign of any tornado aftermath.
One of the great disappointments of my life was during the memorials for President Reagan learning that it is pronounced “Point Moo-GOO” rather than “Point MOO-goo”.

it was on the beach... only problem was the island blocked any good sunset from there. used to goto the flat-track races in Ventura and played a concert in O'jai once.
