Two Women Die After Receiving Cervical Cancer Vaccine
FOX ^ | 01/2/508 | Unknown

The death of two young women who received the cervical cancer vaccination is causing some in the U.K. to question a strategy that calls for hundreds of thousands of schoolgirls to receive the shot next fall, the Daily Mail reports.

The young women who died received the vaccination, marketed under the name Gardasil, in Germany and Austria, respectively. The European Medicines Agency has not released their ages.

The two deaths follow the deaths of three U.S. females, ages 12, 19 and 22, who were reported to have died days after receiving Gardasil, which protects against the human papillomavirus — believed to be the leading cause of cervical cancer — was administered.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently reported that 28 women miscarried after receiving the vaccine.

Neither U.S. nor European health officials have directly linked the deaths or miscarriages to Gardasil. The FDA has said there is no reason to reexamine approval of the drug.

A spokesman for Merck, maker of Gardasil, told the Daily Mail there were no plans to change the company's recommendation on use of the vaccine.

Human papillomavirus is an STD. Drug companies make a lot of money selling the vaccination.

To suggest teaching abstinence to stop the spread of STD’s is greatly frowned on by the liberal establishment.

Refuse! Then, teach your daughters about monogamous, marital sex. If they follow this advice they will never need Guardicil. The vaccine is for a sexually transmitted disease that leads to cervical cancer.

As with any medication the benefits must be weighed against the risk. Smallpox vaccines were discontinued because more were dying from the vaccine than from the disease. I'm sure there are women out there who fit the category of benefits out weighing the risk. In a perfect world it would be used on the most at risk population until we have a better history. Unfortunately with patent laws as they are Merek needs to make the profit now, before the patent expires.

According to health officials, about 230 cases of vaccine-related fainting among girls were reported between 2005 and July 2007.

So little information .... Out of how many doses administered? And how does this compare to, say, fainting rates among girls who receive flu vaccinations? Has it been established that the vaccine caused the fainting? Or could something like anxiety about the vaccine (or shots in general) be to blame?

There are few things so capable of causing stupid reactions as a statistic presented without context.

Maybe the vaccine really is bad for some folks ... but if you're gonna claim it, you've got to prove it.

It is my understanding that the reason they are recommending it for very young girls is not because they believe it is prior to sexual exposure but because of severe side effects on more mature women. If true it is reason enough to not allow young women be required to have it until in depth and intense investigation. There seems to be a rush to make this vaccination a standard procedure, why is that? Cervical cancer is not a nice thing, but it is treatable and has a high degree of successful eradication when treated early enough. I most certainly would not allow it to be injected into my young daughter, too much chance that the promotion is motivated by $$$ rather than by protection.

To suggest teaching abstinence to stop the spread of STD’s is greatly frowned on by the liberal establishment.

And yet ... suppose some nice, abstinent girl gets married to a nice boy who, nevertheless, has contracted HPV. Do you suggest she not get vaccinated, because she's abstinent?

I have one word: Vioxx.

And I have one word: tomato.

Tomatoes were at one time considered to be poisonous. At other times, they were frowned upon because they were thought to cause impure sexual desire in people who ate them.

Neither Vioxx nor Tomatoes have any damned thing to do with this vaccine, and whether it's a) safe or b) effective.

“Human papillomavirus is an STD. Drug companies make a lot of money selling the vaccination.”
Correct. Merck is desperate for cash.

“To suggest teaching abstinence to stop the spread of STD’s is greatly frowned on by the liberal establishment.”

Right again.

No, I would suggest that her new husband go to his doctor and have the small flat warts removed. Problem solved. No more human papillomavirus!

If they follow this advice they will never need Guardicil.

Never is an awfully big word. Hint: are you gonna bet your daughter's health on the hope that your future son-in-law never messed around?

Your decision, obviously: but remember that it takes two to tango. You could consider in the sense of innoculating your daughter against her future husband's past.

And if the pharma company had engaged in some full dislclosure, maybe that option wouldn't have been foreclosed to the folks who still wanted to use it. People can have a nasty reaction to being used as guinea pigs.

I was making a point about approval not necessarily guaranteeing safety and/or efficacy.

Hopefully I will do a good enough job and she will ask her husband to have a physical, if he had previous relationships. Why should I risk my daughter’s health on questionable practices? The point is, the vaccine is part of the sex-at-any-age culture.

Oh, my gosh! Thank you so much for that link.

They were trying to push this vaccine on my 12 year old daughter prior to entering 7th grade this year. I knew more about the vaccine than the nurse practitioner and promptly refused this vaccine until more information was known about possible side effects.

Death is certainly a MAJOR side affect!

Whoa, there :) I DON'T know that death is a side effect. Heck, I don't think anyone knows what's going on yet. I just think that the folks who ran out and got this for their kids may be having second thoughts now. And I wouldn't blame them.
