Thompson out, but some backers not abandoning ship

NASHVILLE — Republican Fred Thompson is out of the presidential race, but that isn’t stopping some top Republican officials from continuing to support the former U.S. senator in the Feb. 5 GOP primary.

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, is running as an at-large delegate for Mr. Thompson. Senate Republican Leader Mark Norris, R-Collierville, is running as a Thompson delegate in the 7th Congressional District.

And both are hoping to get to the Republican National Convention this summer as delegates.

During a press availability with reporters this week, Lt. Gov. Ramsey told reporters he has been getting calls from various GOP campaigns seeking his support since Mr. Thompson’s flagging campaign officially fizzled.

“Obviously, Chip Saltsman, who’s with Mike Huckabee, called about 30 minutes after Fred was out, and I asked him what took so long,” Lt. Gov. Ramsey joked of Mr. Saltsman, a former Tennessee Republican Party chairman who is Mr. Huckabee’s campaign manager.

“Yesterday,” Lt. Gov. Ramsey continued, “I got a phone call that came up, unknown number, blocked caller ID. And usually I don’t answer that because it’s usually one of you all (reporters), to be perfectly honest. ... But I answered anyway, and (the voice) said, ‘Hello, this is Mitt Romney.’”

The lieutenant governor said, “I’m going to try to stay out of it at least for right now. I’ll be behind whoever wins.”

Sen. Norris then noted, “I’m a delegate for Fred Thompson, and I’m still on the ballot.”

Asked if he were encouraging people to still vote for Mr. Thompson, Sen. Norris grinned and said, “you bet. I’m a delegate.”

Then came a confession from Lt. Gov. Ramsey: “And I am (a delegate) too. So I will too. I'm a statewide delegate. I'm sure I still will. Even though he's out, I will, at this time.”

Mr. Thompson remains on the ballot and can still win delegates if he wins a certain percentage of the vote.

Oh, I didn’t realize Myers was a SC Justice. How about Roberts and Alito?

The president obviously thinks conservatives like Roberts and Alito are second stringers. You know as well as I do that Myers was the top pick.

A protest vote is better than not voting at all.

I might just vote for Thompson in the primary Feb 5 since he will remain on the ballot. We can hope that maybe no candidate will have enough votes at the convention and Fred could be a consensus candidate. I know this is unlikely but voting for him anyway would be like my own form of protest.

My only other options seem to be voting uncommitted, or closing ranks with some fellow conservatives and voting for Romney. I’ve voted in GOP presidential primaries since 1980. How sad is it that this time I have absolutely no enthusiasm.

I’m with you....when this election season started last Fall I swore I was NOT going to vote for the lesser of 2 evils..really never dreaming we true Conservatives would find ourselves looking at shameless McCain coming from nowhere and being crammed down our throats by the media....they are sooo in love with him...no, I take that back...even if he’d get elected, the libs know they could very easily live with him as Pres....heck, he’s farther left than the left leaning Dem. candidates themselves. I voted for George Bush TWICE, both times holding my nose as I would never vote for Gore or Kerry....and look what I got for my vote...I’ve never felt so betrayed by a President in all my years. I was behind Mr. Thompson from the time I heard he might run..he may not have been the "perfect" Conservative, but I could sure support him whole heartedly and I did... I hold no ill will towards him..rather I understand his pulling out, but I'm sure sorry he's gone from the picture ...that being said, I wish him and his family all the best. I think it's pretty apparent the fix is in...the winner will be who the Republican National Committee , the Democrate Committee and the main stream media have chosen...guess I'm jaded enough when it comes to this gov. and I think it's so thru and thru crooked, it'll do anything and CAN to see their long range plans stay on track.

But we held his feet to the fire, as we can do with the next Republican president. If it’s a RAT, it’s Kos and MoveOn that will be calling the shots.

If he’s still on the ballot in MA, on Feb. 5th, I WILL vote for Fred. Otherwise, I might not bother, or will vote for Romney so McCain or Giuliani can’t get a boost from it.

Some people will whine at you that if you aren’t voting for THEIR nominee, then you’re actually voting for Hillary.

That argument only applies in the GENERAL election, where I WILL vote for the Republican nominee, regardless of who he is. I do NOT want Her Heinous in the White House, nor do I want Obama there.

I think Fred will support whoever the eventual Republican nominee turns out to be. I’ll follow his lead. He may not be hot to trot for that person, but I know he’ll support them over Her Heinous or Obama, because he knows what a disaster for the country either of them would be.

In the primary, I’m writing Fred in. After that, I’ll have to make a hard decision.

Fred has abandonned his bid and he never seemed like he wanted the job anyway.

You're just parroting the MSM with that tripe. Fred wanted it for the RIGHT reasons, unfortunately, many conservatives preferred to be entertained by the flash and dash of the other candidates, and didn't pay attention to what those guys were actually saying! Fred talked to them like adults, but they were acting like teenagers.

Maybe, just MAYBE (yeah, right) the GOP will learn to put up some REAL conservative candidates instead of letting the MSM pick our candidates.

Didn't work after the Perot tantrum, what makes you think it will happen this time?

Anyone still voting for Fred is wasting their vote and only helping McCain win every state with 30% of the GOP voting for him. Fred has abandonned his bid and he never seemed like he wanted the job anyway.

If that ticks you off to a point you dont want to vote. Fine...just feel good knowing you have contributed to why our general election will be between Obama and McCain.

socialist? you are kidding right? Did you know that Romney vetoed the employer mandate and penalty parts of the Mass. healthcare bill but he was overriden by the liberal legistalure? Of course he gets all of the blame from people like you. Come on now...

pretty much set on voting for him and his

throwing away my vote?

Duncan and FRed are still on the ballot in TN

I wish Duncan had not endorsed anyone

A Thompson/Hunter team at a brackered convention would fly if the base is still as disillusioned and have not drank any Kool Ade...

I’ve already voted for Duncan before he dropped out..but I was expecting FRed to do well...

Other than FRed in Nov...I was not planning to vote for any off the liberals they are dressing in conservative-Sunday-go-to-meeting dress..
