Sex show at William & Mary OK'd by Nichol

The university's president cites the First Amendment and academic openness in his decision.

WILLIAMSBURG - The Sex Workers' Art Show will take place Monday at the College of William and Mary, after school President Gene Nichol granted students' requests for the controversial show to be held on campus.

The show, which students arranged for, is scheduled for 7 and 9:30 p.m. performances in the University Center's Commonwealth Auditorium, where the show was held last year.

Featuring strippers, prostitutes and other sex workers performing and discussing their work, the show is in the middle of a nationwide tour. Its Web site lists coming performances at Harvard, the University of Michigan and Virginia Commonwealth University. But a VCU administrator said Monday that the show wouldn't be held on campus.

Last year, the show's presence at William and Mary provoked outrage among some alumni and community members, who accused Nichol of an affront on religion and morality. The performance occurred shortly after it became public that Nichol ordered a cross removed from daily display in a campus chapel.

As he did last year, Nichol said this year that he didn't want the show to be held on campus. However, "the First Amendment and the defining traditions of openness that sustain universities" led him to grant permission for the show, he said.

"Censorship has no place at a great university," Nichol said.

Gene Nichol, who has a previous background with the ACLU, has overseen one controversial decision after another the entire 2-3yrs he has been with the college. And consistently, each of these decisions has sided against conservatism and Christianity in the name of "free speech".

This is the same man that personally BANNED the cross from the Wren Chapel (campus chapel), and then caved into mere part-time censorship of the cross after he lost a $12 million donor to the school over the ploy.

And yet allowing sex workers and strippers to perform on campus at a COLLEGE FUNDED event is in the name of free speech!

This man has got to go.

Except when it pertains to Christianity! A**hole!

The titel you created "PRESIDENT OF WILLIAM & MARY ALLOWS SEX WORKERS' ART SHOW ON CAMPUS (but censors cross in chapel!)" was not the title at the linked source.

Interesting, I figured it would be the feminists who wanted the show censored. Censorship makes for strange bedfellows.

Gene Nichol is an ACLU lefty.

That is all anyone needs to know if they have any grasp of American leftist history.

I wouldn’t bet on that.

I read several radical feminist blogs — and their disdain for ANY nudity or objectification is palpable. They don’t really buy the “empowerment” thing.

“The university’s president cites the First Amendment and academic openness in his decision.”

What a joke - leftists use this to tout their moral, or lack of, and to silence Christians and conservatives. It is obvious that we have come to this point because we, as conservatives, have allowed the leftist to indoctrinate our children and silence us with lawsuits and their name calling (i.e. racists, bigots, etc...). In the end it is leftists like this that overtly express their hate, racism and intolerance - we need our own media to expose this.
