Audio: Mitt Romney laughs at Ron Paul, interviewer morphs into full-blown Paulnut
Hot Air ^

Posted on 01/29/2008 11:42:26 AM PST by mnehring

It starts off reasonably enough, but Romney starts to school host Tampa Bay 1040 WWBA host Mark Larsen and by extension Ron Paul on taxes and entitlements and you can feel the rails start to give way. When Romney has the audacity of hope to laugh at Paul for suggesting that the way to keep the nation secure is to jettison our intelligence agencies and blame ourselves when jihadists attack, well, the rails fly apart. Romney senses the madness and leaves the host to his rant. Turns out there was a Ronulan underneath the whole time.

Now, lest anyone think that I’m advocating the current system, income tax and all, I’m not. I’m not a fan. But I don’t think Paul has the answers, and he comes off as a crotchety old man who is in over his head on every issue. He doesn’t even know who wrote his newsletter, or so he claims, so why should anyone believe him when he says what he says about taxes? Or foreign policy or anything else. If you’re not a racist yourself but you can’t manage to keep your personal newsletter from devolving into a racist cesspool, you can’t or won’t disavow the various miscreants who are publicly supporting you and you’re happy to accept donations on a day that your supporters chose to explicitly celebrate a long-dead terrorist, you ought not be handed the keys to the executive branch of the US government. Ever. Sorry. No number of discrete ideas that sound good on paper but would never survive Congress can overcome all that.

That his supporters can’t engage non-supporters without yelling and carrying on just seals the deal as far as I’m concerned.

I’m not smart enough to make sense of the first paragraph. Must be my public education.

I just listened to this too and I agree. You could tell this guy was a complete Paultard and Mitt got out just in time.

I mean Mitt chuckles about the fact that Ron Paul wants to cut intelligence and blame ourselves whenever we get attacked, and then this mark guy just goes crazy with “YOU’RE LAUGHING AT DEAD SOLDIERS AND DEBT HOW DARE YOU LAUGH AT RON PAUL? 4000 4000 4000 YOU JUST LOST MY VOTE”

Pretty funny actually.

My thoughts exactly. Plenty of things need to be reformed, government does need to be made smaller and the current tax system sucks. But Ron Paul simply isn't the guy to do these things. His ideas on foreign policy and his voting record that belies what he speaks on various issues are show-stoppers in a big way.

I just don't get the bizarre cult-following this guy has.

It appears Malkin was trying to interject as many campaign catch phrases as possible.

Mitt Romney NEVER HAD Mark Larson’s vote! Mark Larson is a nutcase and does not suprise me that he is a Ron Paul supporter!

I’ve been listening to Larsen for the last 5 years, and he’s always been a relative voice of reason on the AM waves. Lately though, he’s really irritated me with some of the drums he’s been banging.

This 1% tax thing... I’d have to read more about it, but he’s been banging the anti-war drum since it started. I’m not going to sit here and disagree that it’s egregious, but harping on it daily is a bit much.

And when Thompson was running, Larsen loved to call him an empty suit. I just wanted Fred to stay on in FL... I wish he’d stay on in FL. I think he would’ve had a great showing here.

He’s right though... Romney’s a RINO and would ultimately run the country the same way he ran Taxachusetts.

Mitt said that a 1 percent national sales tax would not cover the cost of even running the military, much less any other government expenditures and he’s right. There’s a lot of waste in the Federal Government (I should know, I used to work for them) but cutting back our military is not a good idea, not at this time in history.

Perfectly normal interview until 6:45, at the first mention of von Mises. Look out.

L.Ron first mentioned at 8:59.

Slick Willard hangs up at 10:29 and the host wigs out.

For nutbar rants, I’ll give it a 6 out of 10.

Despite the fact that the interviewer goes postal at the end of it, Mitt gave some good answers in this 11 minute interview. Worth a listen!

If memory serves me correctly, Forbes’ flat tax proposal would have been 13% across the board. Here is the CATO article on the One Tax.

One article, not exactly a CATO endorsement, just an opinion piece.

Good grief — the host came unhinged. Romney lost your vote because he doesn’t want to gut intelligence gathering, and because he wants to finish the job in Iraq.

Honestly — I like Romney a little better after that.

The host should write press releases for the New York Chapter of the National Organization for Women.
