Again, this speech needs to be studied, and remolded into today's times and issues. I only wish we had a leader like Reagan, today.

you’d never hear the current candidates ever say “Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

Recommend you pick up the book “The Education of Ronald Reagan” by Thomas W. Evans, Columbia University Press, 2006. It covers the General Electric years and tells his conversion to conservatism. Bits and pieces of this speech were developed years before when he represented the corporation to its internal and external audiences.

And this idea that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power except the sovereign people, is still the newest and the most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man. odd that people today simply refuse to govern themselves.

Lest there be confusion, I mean in respect to “a time for choosing” as in party nominee.

Trying to stop the tears, from listening to Reagan's voice,... I miss him so.
I found the book
in two different links (click on the photos of each) and will put it on my "to buy list."
Thank you very, very much.

All I'm saying is
"Here's a starting point, to build a great speech and a plan for today's conservative movement.
But it will take research and work to update it to today's issues."
Let the updating begin.

What the hell happened along the way? Just look at what we are faced with as conservatives. It is truley a sad time. This Mcain is a selfish, turncoat socialist with ideas he has already tested with fiengold, Kennedy, and the rest of these diabolical, despicable liberal skunks. Hillary, Obama, Mcain, can anyone find a difference between them? I thougth so!

We didn't teach conservatism in school and in college, and we should have. We focus on economic issues in school, instead of morale issues.
This must begin to be taught.

One of the best - if not the best - speeches I’ve ever heard.

Please put this under "Highlight Extended News."
Sincerely, I believe it will help to activate the conservative base to rebuild this speech to today's issues.

We can replace the Soviet Union, with the Muslim Nations.
The taxes, Social Security, and farming issues are useful but need todays figures.

With all due respect after Reagan gave this speech at the 1964 convention Goldwater went on to lose the election by a wide margin to LBJ. It took 16 more years to get a genuine conservative elected to President (both Nixon and Ford were moderates). During those 16 years Reagan remained ever optimistic about conservatism’s ultimate victory.
