WASHINGTON - The political redemption of John McCain began half a year ago, half a world away at a place called, fittingly enough, Camp Victory.
As his presidential campaign unraveled back home, McCain spent Independence Day 2007 at the sprawling American headquarters on the edge of Baghdad and watched in the heat as 588 U.S. troops re-enlisted. Afterward, the soldiers swarmed McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to thank them for their support.
Depressed, doubtful his campaign could prevail, McCain turned to Graham on the flight home and said, "We can't give up on those kids. ... We have to keep this campaign up."
McCain remembers the moment now as a turning point in his incredible rise-and-fall-and-rise-again quest for the White House.
Before long, he was traveling Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina on his "No Surrender" bus tour, an exhortation not only for the U.S. course in Iraq but also for himself.
"I was experienced enough to know that our campaign was in trouble," McCain recalled last week in an AP interview. "But I was determined to struggle on."
McCain, an ex-Navy pilot who spent five and a half years as a Vietnam prisoner of war, once said he's had "a pretty eventful life."

Welcome to FR, shouldn’t that s/n be “moderate_republican” or possibly even “democrat for McCain?”
Good point. After all, the man that said everyone in Washington is corrupt is also the same man who was the only Republican of the Keating Five and who received the most political contributions from Charles Keating.
It's gonna be hard making a case against Hillary's illegal political escapades with this clown as the GOP nominee.
No, never a demon-rat.
So what you are saying is; While McAmnesty has spent the last ten-twently years veering hard left and stabbing his party in the back, Romney has been slowly coming to the “Right” side of the issues.
Thanks to your post, I’m DEFINATELY not voting for McAmnesty.
Would you vote for Hitlery or Osama?
What crap. What a fable
“No, never a demon-rat.”
Democrat = Moderate with a spine.
So he was for all these things before he was against them?
Something in the Massachusetts water maybe?
“Would you vote for Hitlery or Osama?”
If I’m not going to vote for YOUR liberal, why in hell would I vote for theirs?
You have summarized McCain well. Romney governed in rat land. I give him some slack because he could not have been elected without moderating his views. McCain has been elected in a solid conservative state. Rats in Arizona must move right. McCain has actively undermined conservative goals and principles. He has championed ideas that conservatives despise. He seems to have opposed conservative ideas just out of spite on a number of occasions.
One reason: Ann Coulter, a star for many Freepers.
While the RINO’s are jumping onto McCain’s “Straight Jacket Express”, Mitt Romney is winning the majority of REGISTERED REPUBLICANS in every state he’s run in.
We need to keep pushing this. I won’t support anyone that doesn’t reveal where there money is coming from. My guess is that McCain’s money is not coming from Republicans.
Hey another worthless moderate gives their view. Don’t waste may time.
“moderate_conservative
Since Feb 2, 2008”
So, does Juan pay extra on the weekend before super Teausday?
Juan gave me extra pesos! ;-)
“Romney has been slowly coming to the Right side of the issues.”
Slowly?
Romney did not even become a republican until 1993, he was voting for and contributing to democrats before he started the 1994 campaign, he didn’t adopt this new conservative persona until the last 30 months or so for this national campaign.
