There Will Be Blood (MoDo's prediction on the Billary & Obama fight)
NY Times ^ | February 3, 2008 | MAUREEN DOWD

Suddenly, everyone was in the mood for love. Would the scream team turn into the dream team?

After Thursday’s Democratic debate, CNN’s Carol Costello said there were “heart palpitations” and “ripples of joy” in the glittery Kodak Theater audience at the idea of a Hillary-Obama or Obama-Hillary ticket, after he was gallant with her and she laughed gaily with him.

How could Hollywood not fall in love with Hollywood’s favorite plot? After lots of sparking and sparring, the couple falls into each other’s arms in the last scene.

The would-be matchmakers didn’t seem to know that in Hollywood, couples who have chemistry on screen often don’t like each other off screen, and ones who are involved off screen often don’t have any chemistry on screen.

And so it is with Barack and Hillary. Thursday night was not the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Just a beautiful, dare we say, fairy tale.

Hillary is done with playing a supporting role to a political natural. And why would Obama want to follow in the frustrated footsteps of Al Gore, who became Bill Clinton’s vice president only to find that the job was already taken by Hillary? Think about being third banana to Billary? There won’t be any Dick Cheney-style coup in Hillary’s White House.

“Can you imagine being in that position?” a member of Team Obama said tartly. “Well, neither can he. It’s just part of their campaign to marginalize him. I think they’re pushing every freaking button they can right now.”

Team Obama refers to the Clinton campaign as “Jaws” because “just when things are quiet, they keep trying to come back and capsize the boat.”

A more accurate snapshot of the frosty Clinton-Obama relationship came on a frosty December day in a scorching encounter that is now known simply as...

MoDo is making a catalogue of events, e.g. "the snub" and "the tarmac moment."

And yet -- this is exactly what will happen.

He'll swallow his pride with his eye on 20012 or 2016 -- not realizing that allying with the CLintons usually leads to tragedy.

Obama vs McCain - Obama wins.

Hillary vs McCain - even I will hold my nose and vote for McCain.

They’re all unfit to serve, in any combination.

Regarding any Clinton\Obama ticket ...Obama should also realize that Clinton slime is transitive.

Witness the Gore campaign in 2000 - he could never shed himself of that Clintonian taint.

If after super Tuesday the race is still in doubt, Hillary will have to choose Obama as her running mate to keep peace in the party and bring the 2 sides together. Hillary will grit her teeth and do it and Obama will realize it will get him the presidency in 2016 when he is still in his fifties.

Not buying that.

Obama isn’t that stupid. - He is just Obama, not the democrat’s idiot water boy.
He will endorse her and wait to assume the mantle. - he will try not to do anything of any importance at all that would tick people off in the interim.

IOW, just like hillary in NY.

Of greater import is that the clintons have no use for him. - The black vote will be secure enough, and they are going to find a candidate who can deliver a state that Kerry did not win.

How well did Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains get along off-screen?

And why would Obama want to follow in the frustrated footsteps of Al Gore

The real question is why would Clinton want Obama. MoDo has to realize that Al Gore was picked precisely because he was and is the stupidest person on the American political stage. (Okay! I'm leaving out Joycelyn Elders, but she wasn't on the stage when Gore was first selected.) He was picked because he would pose no threat to Clinton; and he didn't. Now think about Obama. He is all the things Gore is not; and he didn't grow up at the Hay-Adams. There's no way that Clinton would pick him. I don't even think she would pick Bill Richardson. No; think Joycelyn Elders, if Hillary is going to go with a black running mate.

If Obama loses the race for the nomination this year, he'll probably be able to have it for the asking the next time there is no Democrat incumbent, and it doesn't matter if he's Vice President--he'd be better off staying in the Senate where he would not be tainted by the association with Hillary.

I've always figured Hillary would go for a white male who might help tip one or two key states her way. Until now every ticket has had two white males with two exceptions--the Mondale/Ferraro ticket in 1984 and the Hoover/Curtis ticket in 1928 and 1932 (Curtis was part Kaw Indian). Having a ticket with no white males on it may seem a bit like overdoing it when Hillary already has trouble attracting votes from that segment of the population (other than gays and lawyers).

Of course Elders had the problem of living in Arkansas, so the Arkansas electors would not have been able to vote for both Bubba and her. That problem doesn’t exist now because Hillary is a resident of New York...but Elders has never held elective office. Maybe Carol Moseley Braun or Barbara Lee would be good to assuage feelings hurt by Bill’s rhetoric against Obama. Or Oprah, even if she hasn’t held office.

I love going to the NYT site from FR. I want their web logs to show thousands of such hits. FR is NYT 2nd best friend—No. 1 is Ann Coulter, who alone gives them thousands of hits.

I must give MoDo credit for this last line:

“They really should have taken home gold statuettes.”

That’s worthy of Ann Coulter.

nah. I can't imagine why people insist on this scenario. She won't ask and he won't accept.

Obama will never win an election. The Democrats would rather sit home then vote for a black man.

There won’t be any Dick Cheney-style coup in Hillary’s White House.

Is this a reference to the time Cheney and Rove drugged W and locked him in the White House attic so they could proceed with their evil plan to wire tap the phones of all registered Democrats?

Or what?
