Symptoms: Metabolic Syndrome Is Tied to Diet Soda
NY Times ^ | February 5, 2008 | NICHOLAS BAKALAR

Researchers have found a correlation between drinking diet soda and metabolic syndrome — the collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes that include abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and blood glucose levels — and elevated blood pressure.

The scientists gathered dietary information on more than 9,500 men and women ages 45 to 64 and tracked their health for nine years.

--snip--

But the one-third who ate the most fried food increased their risk by 25 percent compared with the one-third who ate the least, and surprisingly, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome was 34 percent higher among those who drank one can of diet soda a day compared with those who drank none.

“This is interesting,” said Lyn M. Steffen, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Minnesota and a co-author of the paper, which was posted online in the journal Circulation on Jan. 22. “Why is it happening? Is it some kind of chemical in the diet soda, or something about the behavior of diet soda drinkers?”

Anyone know of any similar studies involving stevia? Stevia is actually a plant which when dried and powdered has a sweet flavor. A different kind of sweet, but pleasant.

I drop-kicked the diet soda about a year ago. Now if I want something fizzy, I mix 2 parts club soda with 1 part juice.

Sounds good to me. If I drink a pop soda with sugar, I like to cut it 1:1 with club soda or seltzer.

There's nothing wrong with Splenda.

That's what people used to say about aspartame, when comparing it to saccharine. If there's nothing wrong with Splenda, how come I and many others suffer severe intestinal distress is we eat it?

I had some Splenda in my cupboard, and an ant crawled in there and ate some...and died. I thought maybe it just got stuck in the box, but then I remembered that it was an ant, and they can go anywhere. I thought maybe it just sat there eating something "sweet" until it died, but then I remembered that those single ants usually taste something and then bring it back to the colony. I've never found dead ants in my cupboards before. Only in that box of Splenda.

I drink Diet Coke but never with the poisonous Aspartame, only with Splenda (sucralose).

Sucralose is made by replacing three select hydrogen-oxygen groups on sucrose (table sugar) molecules with three chlorine atoms, keeping in mind that table salt is an ionic bond of sodium and chlorine.

This study is the misguided fallacy of highly educated fools with to much time on their hands. I became diabetic because of all the regular soft drinks with sugar that I consumed.

Now I still want the soft drinks so I drink Diet Coke w/ Splenda. The supposed experts at the University of "diet" MinneSoda have put the cart before the horse and lord knows how, but these educated morons continued their lunatic farce for nine years.

The exponential loss of mother wit in our culture is a pervasive peril that overshadows the most pressing threats.

Chemical formula - Common name

C12H22O11 - Sugar

NaCl - Salt

C12H19Cl3O8 - Sucralose

Show me why you think Sucralose can be harmful?

You might also keep in mind that:

Gastric acid consists mainly of hydrochloric acid (HCl) (around 0.5%, or 5000 parts per million), and large quantities of potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl).

I meant no MAN-MADE chemicals. I will take what God made.

Sugar that you purchase in a grocery store is MAN-MADE.

I already explained my multiple negative personal experiences with it. I really tried to give it a chance. I drink several Diet Cokes a day. I'm not a-skaired of chemicals, but I'm not touching Splenda any more.

Please don't drink Diet Coke with Aspartame. Especially do not put Aspartame in a hot beverage.

Too late.

I remember when the Aspartame web scares really started circulating. At the time I worked with a bunch of PhD Chemists. They all laughed at it and said it was crap.

I had multiple negative personal experiences with Aspartame. I frequently drank over 20 cans of diet soda with Aspartame per day which anyone would say was excessive.

The worst effect I experianced occurred when sitting in team meetings. I would suddenly get violent uncontrollable spasms in my arms and fitfully lurch forward as I slipped off the chair arm. The alarmingly strange neurological symptoms stopped when I stopped dosing myself with Aspartame.

I wonder from time-to-time how many Parkinson's disease cases are actually Aspartame poisonings or at the least have their Parkinson's symptoms exacerbated by this cumulative poison.
